Hebrews Chapters 9-13

Hebrews Chapter 9

The Earthly Tabernacle

1 Now truly, even the first [covenant] had regulations for worship and an earthly holy place.

2 For a tent was completely prepared. The outer part [had] in it the candlestick, the table, and the showbread. This is the Holy Place.

3 Behind the second curtain of the tent is [the place] called the Holy of Holies,

4 Having the golden alter of incense and the ark of the covenant, which was totally covered with gold [containing] the golden jar that held manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.

5 Over it [were] the cherubim of glory whose shadow covered the mercy seat concerning which we cannot now speak in detail.

6 Now after these things were completely prepared, the priests always went into the outer tent doing the service [of God].

7 But only the high priest [goes] into the inner tent and then only once a year, and never without blood which he brought for himself and for the errors of the people.

8 The Holy Spirit making it evident that while the first tent was still standing the way into the Holy of Holies was not yet open.

9 This was a symbol for the present time, in which both gifts and sacrifices that are offered cannot make the conscience of the one who serves perfect,

10 Since [they dealt with] only foods, drinks, various washings, and regulations [for the] body imposed [on them] until the time things would be straightened out.

Jesus Is Priest of Heavenly Tabernacle

11 But now Christ has come as a High Priest of the good things to come through a greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

12 He entered the Holy of Holies only one time, not with the blood of goats and calves but through his own blood, to obtain eternal redemption.

13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on the ceremonially unclean [people], for [the purpose of] sanctifying the flesh, makes [them] ceremonially clean,

14 Then how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? [Compare 1 Peter 3:21]

15 For this reason, he is the mediator of the new covenant, so that those who are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance by a death for redemption from the violations under the first covenant.

16 For where there is a will, there must also be the death of the testator.

17 For a will [is] in force after death, seeing that it is not binding while the testator lives.

18 That is why not even the first [covenant] was initiated without blood.

19 For after Moses had spoken every rule to all the people as the law commanded, he took the blood of calves and goats, along with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people.

20 He said, “This [is] the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.”

21 Likewise, he sprinkled blood both on the tent and all the utensils of the religious service.

22 In fact, according to the law nearly everything is cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood, [there] is no forgiveness.

23 Therefore, it was necessary that the copies of the heavenly things should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ did not enter into the Holy of Holies of human construction, [which is] a copy of the original, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us,

25 Not, however, that he should offer himself frequently, like the high priest enters the Holy of Holies every year with blood not his own,

26 For then he would have had to suffer many times from the foundation of the world. But now at the end of the world, he has appeared one time to annul sin by the sacrifice of himself.

27 As it is appointed for people to die one time, and after that The Judgment,

28 So Christ was offered one time to bear the sins of many, and for those who look for him, he will appear the second time not to deal with sin but for salvation.

Hebrews Chapter 10

Earthly Sacrifices Do Not Cleanse Sin

1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, not the thing itself, can never with those sacrifices, which they continually offer year after year, make those who come perfect.

2 For wouldn’t they have stopped being offered? Because once purified, those serving should have no more consciousness of sins.

3 But in those [sacrifices there is] a recollection of sins every year,

4 Because [it is] impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Messiah’s Sacrifice Cleanses From Sin

5 For this reason when he came into the world, he said, “Sacrifice and offering is not what you want, but you have prepared a body for me.

6 “You were not pleased with burnt offerings or sin-offerings.

7 “Then I said, ‘Look! I am here (in the scroll of the book it is written about me) to do your will, O God.’” [Compare Psalm 40]

8 When he said above, “Sacrifice, offering, burnt offerings, and sin-offerings you didn’t want nor were pleased [with them].” ([Referring] to those offered by the law).

9 He then said, “See, I have come to do your will, O God.” He abolishes the first, so that he may establish the second.

10 By that will we have been sanctified from the guilt of sin through the one-time sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ.

11 Every priest stands day after day doing service and offering the same sacrifices over and over, which can never take away sins.

12 He [Jesus] himself, however, after he had offered one permanent sacrifice for sins, sat down on the right hand of God,

13 From then on waiting until his enemies are made his footstool.

14 For by one sacrifice, he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

15 The Holy Spirit is also a witness to us, because after what he had said previously,

16 “This [is] the covenant that I will make with them after those days,’ says the Lord, ‘I will put my laws into their heart, and I write them in their minds,

17 “’And I will no longer remember their sins and lawless actions.’” [Jeremiah 31:33-34]

18 Now where [there is] forgiveness of these, there [is] no more sacrifice for sin.

Messiah’s Blood Was the Acceptable Sacrifice

19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter into the Holy of Holies by the blood of Jesus,

20 By a new and living way which he has initiated for us through the curtain, that is, his flesh,

21 [Having] a High Priest over the house of God,

22 Let us come near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, [because] our hearts have been sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

23 Let us tightly hold on to the confession of hope without wavering, for the one who promised is faithful.

24 Let us keep considering one another in order to stimulate love and good works.

25 Do not forsake our meeting together as [is] the practice of some, but encourage [each other] and more so as you see the Day coming,

Our Faith Must Continue

26 Because, if we keep on sinning deliberately after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there doesn’t remain any more sacrifice for sins,

27 Only a certain fearful expectation of judgment and indignation of fire which will devour the adversaries.

28 Anyone who despised Moses’ law died without compassion on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserving the one who has spurned the Son of God and has considered the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

30 For we know him who has said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay,” says the Lord. And in addition, “The Lord will judge his people.” [Deuteronomy 32:35-36]

31 [It is] a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But remember the past days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great struggle of hardship.

33 At times, you were viewed with scorn, both with insults and persecutions, and at times, you were associated with those who were treated this way.

34 For you had compassion on me in my imprisonment and with joy allowed the stealing of your possessions, knowing in yourselves that you have better and enduring possessions in heaven.

35 Therefore, do not throw away your boldness, which has great reward.

36 You need perseverance, so that, after doing God’s will, you will receive the promise.

37 For besides, in a little while, he, who will come, will come, and will not delay.

38 Now the just will live by faith, but if he turns back, my soul will not be pleased with him. [Habakkuk 2:3-4]

39 But we are not those who turn back into eternal ruin but of those who have faith for preserving the soul.

Hebrews Chapter 11

Faith Defined and Examples

1 Now faith is the foundation of the things we hope for, the evidence of the things we cannot see.

2 For by it the elders received a good testimony.

3 It is through faith that we understand that the universe was established into systematic order by the word of God, so that the things that we see did not come into existence from things that are visible.

4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he gave witness that he was righteousGod testifying about his offering. By it―even though he is dead―he continues to speak.

5 By faith Enoch was taken away without experiencing death and was not found, because God had taken him away, and before he was taken away, he had the testimony that he pleased God.

6 For without faith, [it is] impossible to please [God], because the one who comes to God must believe that he exists and is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.

7 By faith Noah was warned by God concerning things never seen yet. So, fearing [God] he built an ark for the saving of his family. By this, he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness, which comes by faith.

8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place which he would later receive as an inheritance, obeyed and left, even though he did not know where he was going.

9 By faith he lived as a foreigner in the Promised Land living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise,

10 Because he looked for a city whose designer and builder is God, [a city] with foundations.

11 By faith Sarah also received the miracle to conceive offspring and delivered a child when she was too old, because she considered him faithful who had promised.

12 Therefore, there was born from one, and him as good as dead, as many as the multitude of stars of the sky and like the innumerable sands of the seashore.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises but anticipating them. They were convinced about them, welcomed [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14 Now, they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

15 Truly, if they kept thinking about the [country] from where they came, they would have the chance to return.

16 But now they desire a better [country], that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

17 By faith, Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. He who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

18 Of whom it was said, “That through Isaac will be descendants be named.”

19 Reasoning that God was able to raise [him], even from the dead, from where, figuratively speaking, he did receive him.

20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed both sons of Joseph and worshiped [leaning] on the top of his staff.

22 By faith Joseph, when he was dying, mentioned the departure of the children of Israel and gave instructions concerning his bones.

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,

25 Having preferred to suffer affliction with the people of God instead of enjoying the pleasures of sin for a short time,

26 Considering being insulted for the sake of Christ to be greater riches than the treasures in Egypt, because he kept focusing on the future reward.

27 By faith he left Egypt without fearing the king’s wrath, because he was unshakable as if seeing him who is invisible.

28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn would touch them.

29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as if on dry land, which when the Egyptians attempted to do drowned.

30 By faith the walls of Jericho collapsed, after they went around them seven days.

31 By faith Rahab, the harlot, was not killed with those who refused to believe, because she had received the spies with peace.

32 What more can I say? There is not enough time for me to speak about Gideon, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets.

33 Who, through faith, overcame kingdoms, did what was right, received the promises, shut lion’s mouths,

34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned back foreign armies.

35 Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, so they might obtain a better resurrection.

36 Others experienced derision and whipping, and after that chains and the dungeon.

37 They were stoned; they were sawn in two, were cruelly tempted, and were slain with the sword. They wandered around in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, afflicted, [and] tormented.

38 (Of whom the world was not worthy), they wandered in deserts and mountains; [they lived] in caves and holes in the earth.

39 These all, having received a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise.

40 God having provided something better for us, in order that they would not become perfect without us.

Hebrews Chapter 12

Let Us Persevere To The End

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded with such a great throng of witnesses, let us get rid of every hindrance and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that lies before us.

2 Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of [our] faith, who instead of the joy setting before him patiently persevered the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.

3 Therefore, carefully think about him who persevered such a contradiction of sinners against him, lest you become weary and faint in your souls.

God’s Discipline

4 You have not yet resisted, striving against sin, to the point of bloodshed.

5 Have you forgotten the encouragement which speaks to you like children? “My child do not despise the Lord’s training, nor despair when rebuked by him.

6 “For whom the Lord loves, he trains and punishes.” [Proverbs 3:11-12]

7 If you calmly endure discipline, God treats you as children, because what child is [there] whom the father doesn’t discipline?

8 But if you are without any training, of which all are partakers, then you are illegitimate, not children.

9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who trained [us], and we gave [them] great respect. Will we not much more be under the authority to the Father of our spirits and live?

10 Truly, they disciplined us for only a few days according to what seemed best to them, but he for our benefit, so that we may be partakers of his holiness.

11 Now no training at the time seems joyous but joyless, nevertheless, after it is all over, it produces the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.

12 For this reason, lift the hands which hang down and those feeble knees,

13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest what is lame become dislocated, instead let it be healed.

Warning To Not Falter

14 Pursue peace with all, as well as holiness. Without [holiness] no one will see the Lord.

15 Beware lest anyone comes short of God’s grace, that no root of bitterness springing up troubles [you] and through it many become defiled,

16 Lest any be a fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for a single meal gave away his birthright.

17 For you know that afterwards when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected, because he could find no opportunity to reverse [what had happened] even though he sought it carefully with tears.

We Do Not Come To The Mountain of Fear

18 For you have not come to a physical mountain with its burning fire, blackness, gloom, violent winds,

19 Trumpet blast, and spoken words, which when they heard, the hearers begged that the message wouldn’t be spoken to them anymore.

20 For they could not tolerate what was commanded, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be killed by stoning or spearing.” [Exodus 20:19]

21 So terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I’m terrified and shaking.” [Exodus 19:13]

We Come To The Mountain of Joy

22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the City of the Living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable group of angels,

23 To the joyful gathering and assembly of the firstborn (whose names are written in heaven), to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just people made perfect,

24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and the sprinkling of blood that speaks better than Abel’s.

Do Not Reject God’s Warning

25 Beware, that you don’t refuse him who speaks, because if they didn’t escape him who spoke on earth, how much more will we not escape if we turn away from him who [speaks] from heaven.

26 His voice shook the world then, but now he has promised, “Yet once more, I [will] shake, not only the earth, but also heaven.” [Exodus 19:18 and Haggai 2:6]

27 Now this quote, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of shakable things that are made, so that those things which cannot be shaken will stay in place.

28 Therefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us keep holding on to grace through which we can serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear,

29 Because our God [is] a consuming fire.

Hebrews Chapter 13

Various Rules and Requests

1 Let brotherly love continue.

2 Do not forget to be hospitable to strangers, because in doing so some have unknowingly been hospitable to angels.

3 Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them. [Remember] those who are mistreated, as though your body is being [mistreated] also.

4 Let marriage be honored by all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

5 Let your conduct be without covetousness. Be satisfied with what you have, because he has said, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” [Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:5, and 1 Chronicles 28:20]

6 So then, we can boldly say, “The Lord is my helper,” and “I will not be afraid of what anyone will do to me.“ [Psalm 37:25, Psalm 27:1, and Psalm 118:6]

7 Remember those leading you, who spoke the word of God to you. Imitate their faith. Carefully think about the outcome of their way of life.

8 Jesus Christ [is] the same yesterday, today, and forever!

9 Do not be carried away with various and strange teachings. For [it is] a good thing that the heart be stabilized by grace, not with foods that have not benefited those who follow [those rules].

10 We have an altar from which, those serving The Tabernacle, have no right to eat.

11 For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the Holy Place by the High Priest for sin, are burned outside the camp.

12 For this reason, Jesus also, so he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered outside the gate.

13 Therefore, let us go out to him, outside the camp, and sharing his reproach.

14 For here we have no permanent city, but we are looking for one to come.

15 Therefore, through him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of [our] lips confessing [this] to his name.

16 Do not forget to do good and share, because with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

17 Be persuadable by those who lead you and yield yourselves, because they watch over your souls as those who must give an answer [and] so that they may do it with joy and not grieving, because that would not be profitable for you.

18 Pray for us, because we are confident that we have a good conscience and are always wanting to live doing what is right.

19 I beg [you] even more to do this, so that I may be quickly restored to you.

Blessing and Prayer

20 Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

21 Bring you to perfection in every good work to do his will, doing in you that which is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.

22 Brothers, I urge you to allow this message of encouragement, for I have written to you a brief letter.

23 Know that [our] brother Timothy is set free; with whom, if he comes soon, I will see you.

24 Greet your leaders and all the saints. Those from Italy greet you.

25 Grace [be] with all of you. Amen.

  1. My Greek is weak, having only 2 years of Greek study, but with Greek and other languages helps.

  2. It is offered to all freely.

  3. I have worked on this since the late 1990s and continue revising it.

  4. It came about due to my younger children having difficulty understanding the text.

  5. It is based on the Textus Receptus and the Majority Text as edited by Dr. Wilbur Pickering et al.

  6. Brackets [] are used to enclose text that is added to clarify the sense.

  7. Occasionally, italics are used to indicate a questionable valid text in the Greek, as Matthew 3:11 and fire.

Hebrews

Hebrews Chapter 1

Jesus Is God

1 God, who in times past spoke by the prophets to the fathers at various times and in various ways,

2 Has in these last days spoken to us by [His] Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things and through whom he made the worlds.

3 [The Son], being the brilliant shining of [His] glory and of the same essence, and maintaining everything by his powerful word, after—by himself—making purification of our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty of high,

4 Being so much better than the angels as he has inherited a more excellent name than they.

Superior To Angels

5 For to which of the angels did he ever say, “You are my son, this day I have begotten you?” [Psalm 2:7] And again, “I will be a Father to him, and he will be a Son to me?”

6 Again, when he brings in the first born into the world, he says, “Let all the angels of God worship him.” [Deuteronomy 32:43 LXX]

7 But about the angels he says, “Who makes his angels spirits and his attendants a flame of fire.” [Psalm 104:4]

8 But to the Son [he says], “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom.

9 “You have loved righteousness and hated breaking the law, therefore, God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness far above your peers.” [Psalm 45:6-7]

10 And, “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

11 “They will perish, but you remain. All of them will become worn out like garment,

12 “Like outer clothing you will fold them up, and they will be changed, but you are the same, and your years do not end.” [Psalm 102:25-27]

13 To which of the angels did He ever say, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?” [Psalm 110:4]

14 Are not all ministering spirits sent out to help those who will be heirs of salvation?

Hebrews Chapter 2

Jesus Provides the Only Salvation

1 Therefore we must pay closer attention to the things that we have heard, lest we drift away.

2 For if the message spoken by angels was proven true, and every violation and disobedience received a just repayment,

3 How will we escape, if we disregard such a salvation, which first began to be proclaimed by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

4 God also bore witness, both with signs and miracles, and with different types of power and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will.

Jesus Is Fully Human and His Purpose

5 For he has not made the world to come—of which we speak—under the authority of angels.

6 But someone somewhere gave his witness saying, “What is man, that you would remember him, or the son of man that you would come and help him.

7 “You made him a little lower than the angels; you adorn him with glory and honor; you set him over the works of your hands.

8 “You put everything under his feet.” [Psalm 8:4-6] For to put all under his authority, [means] he left out nothing that is unable to be under his authority, but now we do not see everything under his authority.

9 But we can look at Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, so that he by the grace of God might taste death for everyone, [now] crowned with glory and honor.

10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was right for him—for whom are all things and by whom are all things—to perfect the leader of their salvation through sufferings.

11 For both the one who sanctifies and those being sanctified are all from one, for this reason he is not ashamed to call them brothers.

12 He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers. In the midst of the church, I will sing praise to you.” [Psalm 22:22]

13 Again, “I will put my confidence in him.” And again, “Look, I and the children whom God has given me.” [Isaiah 8:18]

14 So then, as the children have flesh and blood in common, so he also likewise took of the same, so that through death he might inactivate the one who had the power of death, that is, the Devil

15 And deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime held in bondage.

16 Truly, he didn’t come to help angels. He came to help the descendants of Abraham.

17 Therefore, it was necessary in all things to become like his brethren, so that he could be a merciful and faithful high priest before God, to make atonement for the sins of the people,

18 Because he has himself suffered from being tempted, he is able to help those who are now tempted.

Hebrews Chapter 3

Jesus Is Superior to Moses

1 As a result, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our common confession, Christ Jesus.

2 He was faithful to him who appointed him, just like Moses [was faithful] in all of God’s house.

3 For this man is entitled to greater honor than Moses, in the same way as one who builds the house has greater honor than the house.

4 For every house is built by someone, but he who built everything is God.

5 Truly Moses was faithful as a servant in all of God’s house as a witness for those things spoken about later,

6 But Christ as a son over his own house. We are his house, if we tightly hold on to our boldness and rejoicing of hope firmly to the end.

Jesus Warning About Unbelief

7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you will listen to his voice,

8 “Do not harden your hearts, as in ’The Provocation,’ the day of testing in the wilderness,

9 “When your fathers challenged me, questioned my credibility, and saw my works for forty years.

10 “Therefore, I was totally disgusted with that generation and said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not really known my ways.’

11 “So I swore in my wrath, ’They will never enter my rest.’” [Psalm 95:7-11]

12 Be careful, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God.

13 Urge one another every day while it is still “Today,” lest any of you become hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

14 For we have been made partakers of Christ, if we hold on to the beginning of our confidence firmly to the end.

15 That’s why it is said, “Today—if you will listen to his voice—do not harden your hearts as in ’The Provocation.’”

16 For some, after they had heard, did provoke to anger, but not everyone who came out of Egypt with Moses.

17 But with whom was he exasperated with for forty years? Wasn’t it with those who had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?

18 Or to whom was it that he swore that they wouldn’t enter into his rest? Wasn’t it with those who refused to believe?

19 So we see that they could not enter because of unbelief.

Hebrews Chapter 4

God’s Promised Rest Is Coming

1 Therefore, let us be very careful, lest, since the promise of entering his rest still remains, any of you perhaps will fall short of it.

2 For the Good News was spoken to us as well as to them, but the message heard [by them] did not benefit them, [because it was] not united with faith in those who heard it,

3 Yet, we who have believed enter rest, just like he said, “As I have sworn in my wrath, those people will never enter into my rest,” even though the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he spoke in a certain place about the seventh day this way, “And God rested the seventh day from all his works.” [Genesis 4:4]

5 Again here, “If they will enter into my rest...”

6 So then, it follows for some to enter into it, and those to whom it was first spoken did not enter because of obstinate unbelief.

7 Moreover, he designates a certain day, today—saying through David after such a long time—to quote it exactly, “Today—if you will listen to his voice—do not harden your hearts.”

8 If Joshua had given them rest, then [God] afterward wouldn’t have spoken about another day.

9 Therefore, there remains a rest for the people of God.

10 For one who enters his rest also ceases from his own works, just as God did from his.

11 Therefore, let us be diligent to enter into that rest, in order that no one would fall in the same obstinate unbelief.

12 For the Word of God is living, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to separate the soul and spirit, and joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

13 Nor is there anything in creation that is not transparent in his sight, but all things are uncovered and opened to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account [of ourselves].

Jesus Is The High Priest

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who is gone into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold on tightly to what we believe,

15 For we don’t have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses but was in every way tempted like us, yet without any sin.

16 Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in the time of need.

Hebrews Chapter 5

1 All high priests taken from among men are appointed for people in things [pertaining] to God, so that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins,

2 Being able to be gentle to those who are ignorant and those who have wandered away, for he himself is also encompassed with weakness.

3 For this reason, he must bring an offering for his own sins just as he does for the people.

4 No man takes this honor for himself, instead [it is for] him who is called by God, like Aaron.

5 So also, Christ didn’t glorify himself to be made high priest, instead [it was] he who said to him, “You are my Son. Today, I have begotten you.” [Psalm 2:7]

6 As he also says in another place, “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” [Psalm 110:4]

7 [Christ] in the days of his flesh, when he had offered requests and urgent appeals for help with intense cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death was heard because he feared.

8 Even though he was a son, yet he learned obedience through the things which he suffered.

9 Having finished all this, he became the author of eternal salvation to those who obey him,

10 Having been verbally designated by God a high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Warning Not To Fall From the Faith

11 About whom we have many things to say and difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to listen.

12 Also at the time you should be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the basics of the word of God and have become as those who need milk and not solid food.

13 For everyone who uses milk is inexperienced with the word of righteousness, because he is a baby.

14 But solid food belongs to those who are mature having their spiritual senses exercised through use to discern both good and evil.

Hebrews Chapter 6

Encouragement to Grow Doctrine

1 So then, leaving the discussion about the basic principles about Christ, let us go on to maturity, not laying the foundation again of repentance from dead works and of faith in God,

2 Of the doctrine about baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection from the dead, and eternal judgment.

3 We will do that, if God permits it.

4 For those who were once enlightened, experienced the heavenly gift, were made partakers of the Holy Spirit,

5 Experienced the good word of God and the powers of the coming age,

6 And have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them to repentance again, since they put the Son of God up on the cross again for themselves and expose him to public disgrace.

7 For the earth, which soaks in the rain that frequently falls on it and produces herbs useful for those who work the soil, receives blessing from God,

8 But that which produces thorns and briars is rejected and about to be doomed, whose final state is to be burned.

9 But, beloved, even though we speak this way, we are convinced of better things of you and things that accompany salvation.

10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which you have shown [by your life] for his name in that, you have served and do serve the saints.

11 We desire that each one of you would show the same diligence to [obtain] the unshakable assurance of hope all the way to the end,

12 So that you will not be apathetic but followers of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

God’s Promise Is Sure

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, and since he could not solemnly swear by anyone greater, he swore by himself,

14 Saying, “I will bless you, surely blessing, and multiplying, multiply you.” [Genesis 22:17]

15 So, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

16 Truly people swear by the greater, and a vow of confirmation is to them the end of all argument.

17 In this, God wanting even more abundantly to show to the heirs of promise the unchangeableness of his counsel confirmed it with a vow,

18 So that by two unchangeable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge could have great comfort to hang on to the hope set before us.

19 That [hope] we have is a sure and steadfast anchor for the soul and enters the other side of the veil,

20 Where our forerunner, Jesus, entered, having become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews Chapter 7

The Great Priest Melchizedek

1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem [and] priest of the most high God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him.

2 Abraham also gave him a tenth of everything. First of all, [Melchizedek] by interpretation [means] King of righteousness, and then King of Salem [means] King of peace.

3 [He is] without father, mother, or a genealogy, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life. In this sense, he continually remains a priest like the Son of God.

4 Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave ten percent of the spoils of war.

5 Truly those who are from the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a command to take a tenth from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren even though they come out of the loins of Abraham.

6 But he whose lineage is not from them received a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.

7 Without any contradiction, the lesser is blessed by the greater.

8 Here, men who die receive a tenth, but there, he of whom it is witnessed that he lives [receives them].

9 If I may say so, Levi also, who receives the tenth, paid ten percent through Abraham,

10 For he was still in the loins of his forefather when Melchizedek met him.

Jesus Is Greater Than Aaronic Priesthood

11 Therefore, if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law) what further need [was there] that another priest should arise in the order of Melchizedek and not be mentioned in the order of Aaron?

12 Because the priesthood was being transferred, there needed to be a change in the law also.

13 For the one of whom these things are spoken about belongs to another tribe about which no one attended the altar.

14 For [it is] obvious that our Lord arose from Judah, [and] about this tribe Moses said nothing pertaining to the priesthood.

15 Yet something is still more obvious―another priest arose, similar to Melchizedek,

16 Who was made [a priest] not according to the law about meeting human requirements but according to the power of an endless life.

17 For he testifies, “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” [Psalm 110:4]

18 So there truly is a canceling of the former commandment because of its weakness and ineffectiveness,

19 For the law made nothing perfect. But bringing in a better hope [did], by which we draw near to God.

20 None of this happened without an oath,

21 For indeed, they [Mosaic Law priests] were made priests without an oath, but this one [was made priest] with an oath by him who said to him, “The Lord swore and will not repent, ’You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.’”

22 By so much more was Jesus made a guarantee of a better covenant.

23 Truly, there were many priests, because they were prevented from continuing by death,

24 But this one, because he endures forever, has a nontransferable priesthood.

25 Therefore, he is also able to save them, who come to God through him, to the uttermost, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

26 For such a high priest is suitable for us. [He is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens,

27 Who doesn’t need daily, like those high priests, to offer up a sacrifice first for his own sins, then for the people’s. He did this [sacrifice for the people] once when he offered up himself.

28 The law appoints men high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, [appoints] forever the Son, who is completely perfect.

Hebrews Chapter 8

The Priestly Work of Jesus

1 Now, this is the summary of what we have talked about. We have such a High Priest who sits at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens.

2 [He serves as] the minister of the most holy place and the true tent, which the Lord set up, not man.

3 Every high priest is appointed to bring both gifts and sacrifices, and so [it is] necessary that this man have something to bring also.

4 If he were on earth, then he would not be a priest, since there are priests, who bring gifts according the law,

5 Who serve as an example and shadow of heavenly things just as Moses was warned by God when he was ready to make The Tent, for he says, “See, [that] you make everything according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.”

6 But now he [Jesus] has gotten a more excellent ministry and is far superior, as he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

Jesus Is the Priest of The New Covenant

7 For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, then there would be no need to seek the second.

8 But finding fault with them, he says, “Look, the days are coming when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,

9 “Not like the covenant that I made with their ancestors on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt. Since they did not continue in my covenant, I had no interest in them,” says the Lord.

10 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel in those days,” says the Lord. “I will put my laws into their mind and write them in their heart. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

11 “Never again will they teach their neighbor saying, ’Know the Lord,’ for they all will know me, from the least to the greatest.

12 “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and I will certainly no longer remember their sins and wickedness.” [Jeremiah 31:31-34]

13 By saying, “New,” he has made the first [covenant] old. Now that which is worn out and grows old [is] soon to disappear.

A Few Thoughts About the Gospel of Matthew

Notes
B1 Basically there are two parts.
C1 Part 1 has the Lord Jesus teaching all the people.
C2 Part 2 has the Lord Jesus emphasizing teaching the 12 Apostles.
B2 The Gospel (Good News) has been given recording the earthly life and teaching of the Messiah—Jesus (Yeshua).
B3 Little is given of his life before beginning His ministry.
B4 His genealogy is given to establish His credentials as a Jew. The rest of the Gospel is His ministry.
B5 He taught the true Law. He interprets it correctly which reveals that the teaching of the religious leaders had been corrupted.
B6 Matthew shows through prophecy and miracles that Jesus is Messiah. Jesus does many, even raising the dead. These are not false signs and wonders that might originate with God’s enemies (satan and evil people).
B7 At first, Jesus is widely accepted by the common people but not the leaders. When the people realize that He is not a conquering King but a suffering Messiah, they largely rejected Him and wanted Him dead. Their solution to problems is the death penalty.
C1 Messiah is prophesied in two comings—one as the suffering Messiah and the other as the conquering Messiah.
C2 Suffering Messiah (conquering death and sin): Isaiah 52:13-53:6 NLT See, my servant will prosper; he will be highly exalted. 14 But many were amazed when they saw him. His face was so disfigured he seemed hardly human, and from his appearance, one would scarcely know he was a man. 15 And he will startle many nations. Kings will stand speechless in his presence. For they will see what they had not been told; they will understand what they had not heard about. Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed our message? To whom has the LORD revealed his powerful arm? 2 My servant grew up in the LORD's presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him. 3 He was despised and rejected--a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. 4 Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! 5 But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. 6 All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God's paths to follow our own. Yet the LORD laid on him the sins of us all.
C2 Conquering Messiah is coming
D1 He conquers those who rebel against God
D2 He comes as the King of the Universe
D3 He comes to rescue Israel at the end of the Tribulation: Zechariah 14:1-4 NIV A day of the LORD is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls. I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city. Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.
B8 His sermons teach the character traits of God and the kingdom of God and its laws.
B9 Jesus teaches in parables because the people have rejected and refused to believe His first messages to repent. They did not believe The Light, so God will still tell them things of the Kingdom but in the style of parables. The Lord still taught them, but parables are punishment for rejecting plain truth.
C1 John 5:40 NIV yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
C2 Hebrews 12:25 NIV See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?
C3 Matthew 12:41-42 NLT The people of Nineveh will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here--but you refuse to repent. The queen of Sheba will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here--but you refuse to listen.
C4 Matthew 12:41-42 NLT The people of Nineveh will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here--but you refuse to repent. The queen of Sheba will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen.
B10 Chapter 24-25 deals mainly with prophecy during the Tribulation. Most of it has not happened. These are not signs of the Rapture.
B11 His is successful in His role as Redeemer.
C1 He predicts it: Matthew 26:2 NLT As you know, Passover begins in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.
C2 He initiates the New Covenant.
D1 With Israel:
E1 Ezekiel 37:26 NLT And I will make a covenant of peace with them, an everlasting covenant. I will give them their land and increase their numbers, and I will put my Temple among them forever.
E2 Jeremiah 31:31-33 NLT The day is coming," says the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife," says the LORD. "But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day," says the LORD. "I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
E3 Jeremiah 32:40 NLT And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, and they will never leave me.
D2 With Christians: Matthew 26:27-29 PickNT And taking the cup and giving thanks He gave it to them saying: "Drink of it, all of you; 28 for this is my blood, that of the new covenant, that which is being shed on behalf of many for forgiveness of sins. 29 Furthermore, I tell you that I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
E1 It is correct to read “New Covenant.”
E2 Wilbur Pickering in his translation notes writes: Here, and in Mark 14:24, perhaps 1% of the Greek manuscripts, of inferior quality, omit 'new' (as in the NIV, NASB, LB, TEV, etc.). The original reading, as also in Luke 22:20 and 1 Corinthians 11:25, is new covenant.
D3 The relationship between the New Covenant (Matthew 26:28), the Church (Christians), and Israel (Jews): Rodney Decker is quoted by Tommy Ice: The New Covenant, prophesied in the Old Testament to be made with Israel, was ratified at the Cross and implemented as a replacement of the Mosaic Covenant. It is presently the basis on which anyone relates to God and it governs the life of all believers. The church, though not a formal partner of the New Covenant, participates in the covenant both as a subject of its rule of life and as a recipient of promised Abrahamic Covenant blessings for Gentiles that have come through the Seed of Abraham, Jesus Christ
C3 He dies suffering for sins, paying the penalty for our sins, and shedding His blood for our sins:
D1 Matthew 27:46, 50 NKJV And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" ... And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
D2 Colossians 1:13-14 PickNT who delivered us out of the dominion of the darkness13 and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have the redemption through His blood,14 the forgiveness of our sins. (Pickering has this textual note: Through His blood" is omitted in some 40% of the Greek manuscripts, but the 60% include the best line of transmission. Without the shed blood of God's Lamb, we would have neither redemption nor forgiveness. Praise God for the Blood).
C4 He is buried: Matthew 27:59-60 NKJV When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.
C5 He is risen: Matthew 28:5-6 NKJV But the angel answered and said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. "He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
C6 His success
D1 Hebrews 7:25 CSB Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them
D2 Hebrews 9:11-14 CSB But Christ has appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come. In the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands (that is, not of this creation), he entered the most holy place once for all time, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow, sprinkling those who are defiled, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God?

Matthew 28:18-20 WEL Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. 19 “Therefore, go, disciple all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 20 “Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you, and lo, I am always with you even to the end of the world.” Amen.

Two Styles of Leadership in Bible

Leadership Styles by Len

B1 There are 2 styles of leadership in the Bible.
C1 The shepherd
D1 The greatest example is the Lord Jesus
E1 Mark 14:27 MKJV  And Jesus said to them, All of you will be offended because of Me this night. For it is written, "I will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered."
E2 Hebrews 13:20 MKJV  Now may the God of peace (who brought again our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant.
D2 The word shepherd is ποιμαίνω poimainō (verb) ποιμήν poimēn (noun).
D3 A shepherd feeds, gathers, carries, and gently leads. Isaiah 40:11 NKJV  He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.
D4 He provides. Psalms 23:1 GNB  The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need.
D5 He lets us rest. His provisions are the best. Psalms 23:2 GNB  He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water.
D6 He gives us strength. His leading is always the best and good. He keeps His promises. Psalms 23:3 GNB  He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right paths, as he has promised.
D7 He comforts and goes with us even in the scariest, most fearful moments imaginable: Psalms 23:4 GNB  Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, LORD, for you are with me. Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me.
D8 He makes us feel honored. He protects us from our enemies even when they are near. Psalms 23:5 GNB  You prepare a banquet for me, where all my enemies can see me; you welcome me as an honored guest and fill my cup to the brim.
D9 His goodness is to us. He loves us. Our home will be with him forever. Psalms 23:6 GNB  I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life; and your house will be my home as long as I live.
D10 If we lose our way, He seeks for us. Matthew 18:12-14 GNB  "What do you think a man does who has one hundred sheep and one of them gets lost? He will leave the other ninety-nine grazing on the hillside and go and look for the lost sheep.  13  When he finds it, I tell you, he feels far happier over this one sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not get lost.  14  In just the same way your Father in heaven does not want any of these little ones to be lost.
D11 He is willing to die for us. John 10:15 NKJV  As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
D12 Wants us to imitate His lifestyle. 1 Timothy 4:12 NKJV  Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
C2 The hunter
D1 The greatest example is Nimrod. Genesis 10:8-9 NASB77 Now Cush became the father of Nimrod; he became a mighty one on the earth.  He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the LORD.
D2 Keil & Delitzsch state in their commentary of Genesis 10:8-9: Nimrod “began to be a mighty one in the earth.” גִּבֹּר is used here, as in Gen 6:4, to denote a man who makes himself renowned for bold and daring deeds. Nimrod was mighty in hunting, and that in opposition to Jehovah (ἐναντίον κυρίον, lxx); not before Jehovah in the sense of, according to the purpose and will of Jehovah, still less, like לֵאלֹהִים in Jon 3:3, or τῷ Θεῷ in Act 7:20, in a simply superlative sense. The last explanation is not allowed by the usage of the language, the second is irreconcilable with the context. The name itself, Nimrod from מָרַד, “we will revolt,” points to some violent resistance to God. It is so characteristic that it can only have been given by his contemporaries, and thus have become a proper name.
D3 This is the leadership style of satan—rebellious, dictatorial, psychopathic, murderous, etc. He wants to control everything including thinking, actions, speech, work, etc. in every area of life. There is no free will; it is not allowed. Those who disagree will be hunted down and dealt with.
D4 Church leaders of this sort are called out and by name by the Apostle John. 3 John 1:9-11 NKJV  I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us.  10  Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.  11  Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.
D5 All of which is fueled by pride.
D6 An overriding trait is CONTROLL.
D7 A list of traits from the Dictionary of Bible Themes by Manser.
E1 Self-interest: Philippians 2:3-4 WPNT Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard one another as being better than yourselves.  Let each of you look out not only for his own concerns, but also for what concerns others.
E2 Pride in one’s position: James 3:1 WPNT My brothers, not many of you should become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. [Alford comments: The more the idea prevailed, that faith, without corresponding obedience, was all that is needful, the more men would eagerly press forward to teach: as indeed the Church has found in all ages when such an opinion has become prevalent: for then teachers and preachers of their own appointing have rapidly multiplied]
E3 Love of worldly things: 1 John 2:15 WPNT Do not love the world, neither the things in the world; if anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. [Pickering comments: The crucial issue is the values that the surrounding culture seeks to impose on us—materialism, relativism, humanism; these values are directly opposed to the Father’s values, and therefore to His love.]
E4 Follow the crowd and/or pervert justice: Exodus 23:2 NIV - Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd.
E5 Worldly thinking: Romans 12:2 NLT - Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. [See also Colossians 3:2, 2 Timothy 2:4, Titus 2:12, and James 4:4]
E6 Desire for money: 1 Timothy 6:9-10 NIV - Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
E7 Find pleasure in wicked things: 2 Thessalonians 2:12 NIV - and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
E8 Following false gods of any type or form: Deuteronomy 12:30-31 NIV - and after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not to be ensnared by inquiring about their gods, saying, "How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same." You must not worship the LORD your God in their way, because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the LORD hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.
D7 God judges these types. Note how these types of leaders hurt the sheep in every way possible. They are abusers.
E1 Ezekiel 34:17-22 GNB  Now then, my flock, I, the Sovereign LORD, tell you that I will judge each of you and separate the good from the bad, the sheep from the goats.  18  Some of you are not satisfied with eating the best grass; you even trample down what you don't eat! You drink the clear water and muddy what you don't drink!  19  My other sheep have to eat the grass you trample down and drink the water you muddy.  20  "So now, I, the Sovereign LORD, tell you that I will judge between you strong sheep and the weak sheep.  21  You pushed the sick ones aside and butted them away from the flock.  22  But I will rescue my sheep and not let them be mistreated any more. I will judge each of my sheep and separate the good from the bad.
E2 Jeremiah 23:1 GNB  How terrible will be the LORD's judgment on those rulers who destroy and scatter his people!
E3 Zechariah 10:2-3 NKJV  For the idols speak delusion; The diviners envision lies, And tell false dreams; They comfort in vain. Therefore the people wend their way like sheep; They are in trouble because there is no shepherd.  3  "My anger is kindled against the shepherds, And I will punish the goatherds. For the LORD of hosts will visit His flock, The house of Judah, And will make them as His royal horse in the battle.

Answering Critics Series: The Bible & Women

The Bible and Women

Answering Critics Series
A1 The problem
B1 Some quotes from “Christians”
C1 Even as the church must fear Christ Jesus, so must the wives also fear their husbands. And this inward fear must be shewed by an outward meekness and lowliness in her speeches and carriage to her husband. . . . For if there be not fear and reverence in the inferior, there can be no sound nor constant honor yielded to the superior. –John Dod: A Plaine and Familiar Exposition of the Ten Commandements, Puritan guidebook first published in 1603 (Source)
C2 The second duty of the wife is constant obedience and subjection. –John Dod: A Plaine and Familiar Exposition of the Ten Commandements, Puritan guidebook first published in 1603 (Source)
C3 Tertullian: Rather to affect meanness of appearance, walking about as Eve mourning and repentant, in order that by every garb of penitence she might the more fully expiate that which she derives from Eve, - the ignominy, I mean, of the first sin, and the odium (attaching to her as the cause) of human perdition. “In pains and in anxieties dost thou bear (children), woman; and toward thine husband (is) thy inclination, and he lords It over thee.” And do you not know that you are (each) an Eve? The sentence of God on this sex of yours lives in this age: the guilt must of necessity live too. You are the devil’s gateway: you are the unsealer of that (forbidden) tree: you are the first deserter of the divine law: you are she who persuaded him whom the devil was not valiant enough to attack. You destroyed so easily God’s image, man. On account of your desert - that is, death - even the Son of God had to die. And do you think about adorning yourself over and above your tunics of skins?" (Source: Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 4, Tertullian, Apparel of Women, Part 4 Apparel of Women.)
B2 Some quotes from non-Christians
C1 Charles Darwin wrote on the subject female inferiority through the lens of human evolution. He noted in his book The Descent of Men: "young of both sexes resembled the adult female in most species" which he extrapolated and further reasoned "males were more evolutionarily advanced than females". Darwin believed all savages, children and women had smaller brains and therefore led more by instinct and less by reason. Such ideas quickly spread to other scientists such as Professor Carl Vogt of natural sciences at the University of Geneva who argued "the child, the female, and the senile white" had the mental traits of a "grown up Negro", that the female is similar in intellectual capacity and personality traits to both infants and the "lower races" such as blacks while drawing conclusion that women are closely related to lower animals than men and "hence we should discover a greater apelike resemblance if we were to take a female as our standard." C2 Aristotle: Another example is Cynthia's catalog where Cynthia states "Aristotle says that the courage of a man lies in commanding, a woman's lies in obeying; that 'matter yearns for form, as the female for the male and the ugly for the beautiful'; that women have fewer teeth than men; that a female is an incomplete male or 'as it were, a deformity.' A2 The solution
B1 Bible
C1 The Bible is the only source of 100% truth.
D1 When it quotes someone, it is not necessarily inspired but is 100% accurate truth. The Bible has quotes from the devil, who obviously has “...no truth in him…” (John 8:44).
D2 2 Timothy 3:16-17 CSB - All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. Inspiration is God overseeing the writer is such a way that every word and thought is approved by God.
C2 The Bible must be interpreted in the plain, normal sense.
D1 God is perfectly and completely wise. He knows how to communicate perfectly. We do not need to redefine words or give a certain interpretation to help God explain. A good example is 1 Timothy 2:4 NKJV - who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Calvinists interpret this to mean not all people but only all kinds of people. The passage, however, states all people; there is no word in Greek for kinds. God is perfectly wise and knows how to communicate clearly.
D2 There is no excuse to state we can safely reject this because it was only written to that generation.
C3 Do not interpret the Bible through the filter of theology or a system of interpretation, for example, Covenant Theology or Dispensationalism.
B2 Women
C1 Created in God’s image.
D1 Genesis 1:27 CSB - So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female. The word man is אָדָם 'adam.
D2 Genesis 5:2 CSB - he created them male and female. When they were created, he blessed them and called them mankind. The word mankind (human) is אָדָם 'adam.
C2 The word help meet (KJV) is עֵזֶר`ezer which means a helper. This word is used most often referring to God.
D1 Psalm 33:20 CSB - We wait for the LORD; he is our help and shield.
D2 Psalm 70:5 CSB - I am oppressed and needy; hurry to me, God. You are my help and my deliverer; LORD, do not delay.
D3 עֵזֶר`ezer is not a word describing a lesser or lower caste. It is an equal or even greater.
C3 Of Adam it is said: Genesis 2:18 NLT - Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him." [Emphasis mine]. All of creation was judged good by God except for Adam.
C4 Adam had abilities, gifts, and insights, but not everything he needed. He is not God who is perfect in every way. Eve had abilities, gifts, and insights, too. Together they have a more complete understanding.
C5 So today my wife has abilities, gifts, and insights that I do NOT have. WE can make a better decision and understand situations better because of the greater insights both have. Two are better than one. She is very valuable and precious.
C6 Loved equally by the Heavenly Father: 2 Corinthians 6:18 NLT - And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty.
B3 Some important women in the Bible
C1 Eve
D1 The mother of all living: Genesis 3:20 CSB - The man named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living.
D2 Sinned, but was deceived (Adam deliberately, premeditatively sinned): Genesis 3:13, 20 CSB - So the LORD God asked the woman, "What is this you have done? " And the woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." ... The man named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living. AND 1 Timothy 2:14 CSB - And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed.
E1 Some creepy commentators believe Eve deceived Adam. That is a LIE.
E2 Adam sinned willfully. He knew was he was doing. He did not believe God (lack of faith). He failed the test—a very easy test. All of creation was cursed by God because of Adam’s sin. Romans 5:12 CSB - Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all people, because all sinned. [Emphasis mine]
E3 Eve told the truth: “I was deceived.” Adam blamed the woman, God, and everything else: Genesis 3:12 CSB - The man replied, "The woman you gave to be with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate." Adam was the first human liar.
D3 When Eve figured out everything that happened, she probably wanted to punch Adam out and leave. God reminded her that she was still to desire Adam.
E1 Really evil commentators believe that Eve wanted to rule the world and boss Adam around. They are very, very wrong.
F1 Desire is used 3 times in the Bible:
G1 Translations
H1 First a correct translation: Genesis 3:16 CSB - He said to the woman: I will intensify your labor pains; you will bear children with painful effort. Your desire will be for your husband, yet he will rule over you.
H2 Here is an example of a very evil translation: Genesis 3:16 NET - To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your labor pains; with pain you will give birth to children. You will want to control your husband, but he will dominate you."
G2 The word desire:
H1 It is the Hebrew word תְּשׁוּקָה tesh-oo-kaw' (Strongs H8669).
H2 It means desire, a longing for (towards). It does NOT mean to rule, conquer, boss around, control, etc.
H3 It’s root is שׁוּק, shook (Strongs H7783), which means to run after, desire, to long for. It has NOT mean rule, conquer, boss around, control, etc.
F2 Genesis 4:7 CSB - "If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it." Sin desires, longs for. James 1:14-15 GW Everyone is tempted by his own desires as they lure him away and trap him. Then desire becomes pregnant and gives birth to sin. When sin grows up, it gives birth to death.
F3 Song of Solomon 7:10
G1 Song of Solomon 7:10 NKJV I am my beloved's, And his desire is toward me.
G2 Song of Solomon 7:10 GW I am my beloved's, and he longs for me.
G3 Song of Songs 7:10 CSB - I am my love's, and his desire is for me.
E2 It would be better to understand and interpret the Bible in its plain, normal sense.
D4 Eve did receive punishment: pain in childbirth.
D5 Eve received the promise of the coming redeemer. Adam received nothing except punishment. Genesis 3:15 CSB - I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.
C2 Deborah
D1 She was a prophetess and judge in Israel. Gideon was only the general in the army.
E1 Judges 4:4-5 CSB - Deborah, a prophetess and the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. She would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her to settle disputes.
E2 Deborah being judge and prophetess is NOT because there were no qualified men. God chose HER.
D2 She was also a songwriter and mother. Judges 5:1, 7, 12 CSB - On that day Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang: ... Villages were deserted, they were deserted in Israel, until I, Deborah, arose, a mother in Israel. ... "Awake! Awake, Deborah! Awake! Awake, sing a song! Arise, Barak, and take your prisoners, son of Abinoam!
D3 She gave the command to Barak to start the battle. Judges 4:14 CSB - Then Deborah said to Barak, "Go! This is the day the LORD has handed Sisera over to you. Hasn't the LORD gone before you? " So Barak came down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
D4 Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, finished off the battle by punishing Sisera with a hammer and tent peg. Judges 4: 17-21
C3 Mary, the virgin mother of our Lord Jesus
D1 Had a love for God that was rare in her day. Jesus said that if we love Him (God), we will obey Him. Luke 1:38 CSB - "I am the Lord's servant," said Mary. "May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel left her.
D2 Believed God: Luke 1:45 CSB - Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill what he has spoken to her!
D3 Was one of the few who was loyal even to his death: John 19:25 CSB - Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
D4 Was found in prayer and meeting with the other believers: Acts 1:14 CSB - They all were continually united in prayer, along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
C4 Mary Magdalene
D1 Was the first at the tomb of Jesus: Matthew 28:1 CSB - After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb.
D2 Was the first to see Jesus Christ risen from the dead: Mark 16:9 CSB - Early on the first day of the week, after he had risen, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.
D3 Testified to the Apostles that she had seen the Lord Jesus alive (resurrected). She was not believed, possibly because she was a woman. Luke 24:10-11 CSB - Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.
C5 Philip the Evangelist and deacon had 4 daughters who were prophetesses: Acts 21:8-9 CSB - The next day we left and came to Caesarea, where we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the Seven, and stayed with him. This man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.
C6 Phoebe, the deaconess: Romans 16:1 RSV - I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deaconess of the church at Cenchrea.
B4 How men especially husbands are to treat their wives
C1 Love is a choice, not necessarily an emotion. Ephesians 5:25 CSB - Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her. How many husbands love their wives that much? Love described in the next point.
C2 Love expresses itself in thoughts, desires, words, and deeds, but it is noted by all people with theses characteristics: 1 Corinthians 13:5-8a WEL Love is very patient and kind; love is not envious; love doesn't brag about itself, is not haughty, Doesn't behave improperly, is not self-seeking; love isn't easily aggravated, doesn’t keep a list of wrongs, Doesn't rejoice in injustice, but rejoices with the truth, Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
C3 Husband and wife are partners in life facing joys and difficulties as one. Each supplies their gifts and abilities equally.
C4 Love shows its fruit as this: Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
B5 If the husband does not treat his wife such, he does not love her.
B6 If the husband abuses his wife in any way, she must leave, divorce, and have no contact. If no contact is impossible (children), then low contact. Divorce already has been addressed in another message.
A3 Applications
B1 God said it was NOT good for Adam to be alone.
B2 Women, in particular wives, are a special creation.
B3 How we treat our wives is noticed by God. He will judge if that treatment is not up to His standards.
B4 Abuse is always wrong and proves the husband does not love his wife.
B5 If there is abuse, the wife must leave.
B6 So how are you and I going to treat our wives?
B7 Love for our wives must be the same in public or in private. Our treatment of them the same in public or private.
B8 Women are to be respected, their opinions sought, and treated as an equal human being.
B9 Confess any sin that you have done wrong towards them. Ask God for forgiveness.
B10 Now go and love your wife, your daughters, your granddaughters, mother, grandmother, etc.
A5 Finishing verses which are good to memorize:
B1 Ephesians 5:28 So husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife loves himself.
B2 Ephesians 5:33 But every husband must love his wife as he loves himself, and wives should respect their husbands.
B3 Colossians 3:18 Wives, place yourselves under your husbands' authority. This is appropriate behavior for the Lord's people.
B4 Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and don't be harsh with them.
