Ephesians 5:1-5

A1 Scripture
B1 Therefore be imitators of God as beloved children, and walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma. But, you should not even talk about fornication or any form of moral corruption or insatiableness (as is fitting for saints); nor any obscenity, nor foolish talk or coarse joking (that do not belong), but rather thanksgiving. Because you can know this for sure: no fornicator, nor anyone who is morally corrupt or insatiable (actually an idolater), has any inheritance in the Kingdom of the Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of the disobedience. Therefore do not be participants with them—even though you were once darkness, you are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light  (Ephesians 5:1-8, WPNT)
B2 Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children. And walk in love, as the Messiah also loved us and gave Himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God. But sexual immorality and any impurity or greed should not even be heard of among you, as is proper for saints. Coarse and foolish talking or crude joking are not suitable, but rather giving thanks. For know and recognize this: Every sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, does not have an inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God.  (Ephesians 5:1-5, HCSB)

A3 Notes
B1 Imitators
C1 Not of God doing miracles, like the present days Pentecostal, word of faith, or heretics.
C2 Not willing something into existence, or any of those things that only God can do.
C3 It is referring to have the same desires, goals, attitudes as God does, and the way God deals with people, etc. This is best seen in the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
C4 Is of living a certain kind of life. This is seen in the context here of Jesus' example. Ephesians 4:32 HCSB And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ. We don't compare ourselves to other Christians. We are to compare ourselves to God.
C5 Imitators
D1 Therefore I urge you, imitate me.  (1 Corinthians 4:16, NKJV)
D2 Imitate me, just as I also [imitate] Christ.  (1 Corinthians 11:1, NKJV)
D3 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord when, in spite of severe persecution, you welcomed the message with joy from the Holy Spirit.  (1 Thessalonians 1:6, HCSB)
D4 For you, brothers, became imitators of God's churches in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, since you have also suffered the same things from people of your own country, just as they did from the Jews  (1 Thessalonians 2:14, HCSB)
D5 So that you won't become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance.  (Hebrews 6:12, HCSB)
D6 In holiness: Leviticus 11:44-45 NRSV For I am the LORD your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming creature that moves on the earth.  45 For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt, to be your God; you shall be holy, for I am holy.
D7 The Lord Jesus is our perfect example: Colossians 3:9-10 NKJV  Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,  10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.
D8 Plus, a warning NOT to imitate the wicked: 2 Peter 3:17 NKJV  You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked.
C6 Temptation for the Ephesians would still be great. They had been living and practicing life in a very evil culture. To avoid and help overcome temptation, they were encouraged to not even talk about the sinful practices of the culture they lived in. So Wilbur Pickering translates verse 3: "But, you should not even talk about fornication or any form of moral corruption or insatiableness (as is fitting for saints)."  (Ephesians 5:3, WPNT).
B2 Beloved children—God loves us, so we are beloved children. Because God loves us, we want to imitate Him.
B3 Walk in love. Walk has the idea of living our life, our lifestyle, our thoughts, desires, words, and deeds. All this must be done in love. Truth is essential, and telling the truth is for the good of someone’s soul. It is the soul that we are concerned for. John 3:19-22 WEL This is [the reason for] the judgment, because light is come into the world and people loved darkness rather than light, because their actions were evil. 20 "Everyone who does evil hates the light and doesn’t come to the light, so that his actions may be discovered and reproved [discovered and reproved is one word in Greek]. 21 "But the one who does the truth comes to the light, so that his actions may be plainly seen that they are done for God.
B4 The love of God and His giving of Himself, for love is a choice. We understand this because:
C1 God did not have to do this.
C2 He choose to do this.
C3 He wanted to do this.
C4 Thoughts and desires are not enough. He demonstrated His love.
C5 A sacrifice was needed to atone.
D1 Good works are meaningless, because even one breaking of God's Law sends to hell. No matter how much we do the rest of our lives, it cannot make up for the evil we have done.
D2 Jesus never sinned.
D3 An everlasting death was required.
D4 This death is an separation from God.
D5 Jesus died and was forsaken by the Father.
D6 This was the full payment needed.
D7 The condition now, is to repent and trust into Jesus.
C6 The offering was a sin offering.
D1 "...just like the Son of the Man—He did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”  (Matthew 20:28, WPNT)
D2 "By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."  (Hebrews 10:10, WPNT)
D3 Dr Chafer writes: Substitution
Substitution is not a Biblical term (cf. Trinity, incarnation, etc.), but a Biblical doctrine nonetheless.
1. Old Testament Type.
a. In general, every animal sacrifice offered during Old Testament times substituted for the offender. All this was accordingly a type of Christ dying in the room and stead of the sinner.
b. The sweet savor and non-sweet savor offerings of Leviticus, chapters 1–5, indicate that two accomplishments are to be noticed in Christ's substitution:
(1) The non-sweet savor oblations were, first, the sin offering and, second, the trespass offering. In these the perfection of the offering itself had to be insisted upon since Christ the Antitype is perfect in Himself, but of course, at the same time, the offering is invested with the sin of the offerer. They are called non-sweet savor offerings since God cannot look upon sin with allowance whatsoever. In fulfilling this type of sacrifice Christ cried, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46).
(2) Sweet savor offerings were three in number: first, the burnt offering, second, the meal offering, and third, the peace offering. In these were depicted an aspect of Christ's death which was a delight to His Father, as it has been suggested in Hebrews 9:14: He “offered himself without spot to God.” Here is substitution in the sense that God requires of the believer, not merely that he should have no sins (as typified by the non-sweet savor offerings), but that he indeed should have done all good. These three offerings, consequently, suggest how the perfection of Christ may be accepted of God for a Christian. They are sweet to God since only Christ's perfections are in view, and manifestly as such they could apply to the elect alone.
2. New Testament Doctrine.  Again the same twofold conception obtains. The Scriptures state the doctrine fully.
a. Sweet savor (Phil. 2:8; Hebrews 9:11–14; 10:5–7).
b. Non-sweet savor (Romans 3:23–26; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24; 3:18; cf. Psalm 22:1; Matthew 27:46)."

B5 Fornication—any sexual activity not approved by God.
B6 Uncleanness—everything not addressed by fornication or covetousness. Finding pleasure in thoughts, desires, words, and deeds that God does not approve.
B7 Covetousness—wanting what someone else has. It can be the love of money, things, persons, or fame. It is wrong, ungodlike desire.
B8 Our speech
C1 Good speech is talk that edifies another. Bad speech is talk that destroys another. One teaches and encourages, the other abuses. Abusive speech is evil, but truth is good.
C2 Proverbs has a lot of passages teaching about this.
D1 Proverbs 12:23 GNB  Smart people keep quiet about what they know, but stupid people advertise their ignorance.
D2 Proverbs 15:2 CEV  Words of wisdom come from the wise, but fools speak foolishness.
D3 Ecclesiastes 10:12-14 NKJV The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up;  (13) The words of his mouth begin with foolishness, And the end of his talk is raving madness.  (14) A fool also multiplies words. No man knows what is to be; Who can tell him what will be after him?
D4 Proverbs 4:24 GNB  Never say anything that isn't true. Have nothing to do with lies and misleading words.
D5 Proverbs 10:32 GNB  Righteous people know the kind thing to say, but the wicked are always saying things that hurt.
B9 The inheritance
C1 Who is included or excluded?
C2 What is the inheritance?
C3 Why do we get this inheritance?
A4 Applications
B1 God has set the standard, the routine, for living a Christian life.
B2 God has defined what love is. He shows true love. We need to imitate that love.
B3 God has set the standards for sexual behavior. His rules are the only and the best.
B4 God has set the standard for our speech. Let us be careful.
B5 Greed is not to be found in God’s people.
B6 Humans don’t like God’s standard, so we and they attempt to redefine, minimize, or dismiss in some way. Let us be aware.
B7 Giving thanks is very important. We should give thanks to God and also our fellow humans.

Are You Feeling Loved?

A sermon for today
Are You Feeling Loved?

What is love?
A1 Most people want love, feel loved, and give love to others. Yet, do we love? Do we love our spouse? Do they know that? Do they feel loved? Do you love your children? Do they feel loved? Do you love your parents, your brothers, your sisters, your fellow Christian?
A2 Most people do not feel loved
B1 Loneliness is a growing problem.
C1 Nearly half of Americans report sometimes or always feeling alone (46 percent) or left out (47 percent).
C2 One in four Americans (27 percent) rarely or never feel as though there are people who really understand them.
C3 Two in five Americans sometimes or always feel that their relationships are not meaningful (43 percent) and that they are isolated from others (43 percent).
C4 One in five people report they rarely or never feel close to people (20 percent) or feel like there are people they can talk to (18 percent).
C5 Americans who live with others are less likely to be lonely (average loneliness score of 43.5) compared to those who live alone (46.4). However, this does not apply to single parents/guardians (average loneliness score of 48.2) – even though they live with children, they are more likely to be lonely.
C6 Only around half of Americans (53 percent) have meaningful in-person social interactions, such as having an extended conversation with a friend or spending quality time with family, on a daily basis.
C7 Generation Z (adults ages 18-22) is the loneliest generation and claims to be in worse health than older generations.
B3 The Bible addresses this, too.
C1 Matthew 24:12 GNB Such will be the spread of evil that many people's love will grow cold.
C2 Romans 12:9 WEB Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good.
C3 1 John 3:18 WEB My little children, let’s not love in word only, neither with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.
A3 What is love?
B1 It is a choice. It is a choosing that I will treat someone special.
C1 Some choose to make the choice to love money and wealth: Luke 16:13 WEL "No household servant can serve two masters, for he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Mammon." Even though love of money is A root of evil: 1 Timothy 6:9-10 WEL Those who determine to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and into many foolish and harmful cravings, which drown men in destruction and eternal ruin. 10 For the love of money is a root of all evil, which some, longing for, strayed from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
C2 Some choose to love power: 3 John 1:9 WEB I wrote to the assembly, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn’t accept what we say.
C3 Some choose to love this world, its pleasures, its lusts: 1 John 2:15-17 WEB Don’t love the world, neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s. The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God’s will remains forever.
C4 Some choose to supremely love themself: 1 Timothy 3:2-5 WEL For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, braggers, arrogant, users of abusive language, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, impossible to please, false accusers, unable to control themselves, fierce, despising those who are good, 4 Traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 Having an appearance of godliness but having spurned its power.
C5 What we are to love: Luke 10:27-28 GNB92 The man answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind’; and ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’” “You are right,” Jesus replied; “do this and you will live.”
B2 Love’s actions are listed in the Bible. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a WEL Love is very patient and kind; love is not envious; love doesn't brag about itself, is not haughty, 5 Doesn't behave improperly, is not self-seeking; love isn't easily aggravated, doesn’t keep a list of wrongs, 6 Doesn't rejoice in injustice, but rejoices with the truth, 7 Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends.
B3 We choose to do these things.
B4 Choices have consequences: Proverbs 1:26-29 GW I will laugh at your calamity. I will make fun of you when panic strikes you, 27 when panic strikes you like a violent storm, when calamity strikes you like a windstorm, when trouble and anguish come to you. 28 "They will call to me at that time, but I will not answer. They will look for me, but they will not find me, 29 because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD.
A4 4 Greek words for love
B1 ἀγαπάω agapaō which refers to love is a choice. It is the deepest love. This is the love we are talking about today.
C1 John 3:16 NKJV For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
C2 Matthew 5:43-44 NRSV You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' (44) But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
C3 2 Timothy 4:10 NRSV For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
B2 φιλέω phileō which refers to brotherly love, that is, the love of friends. It is a personal attachment to something (Strong’s Lexicon) and affection. Thus, it is possible to love your spouse as agapaō and phileō.
C1 John 5:20 NRSV The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished.
C2 John 12:25 NRSV Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
C3 1 Corinthians 16:22 NRSV Let anyone be accursed who has no love for the Lord. Our Lord, come!
B3 ἔρως érōs is sexual, passionate, physical love, even infatuation. This word is not in the Bible.
B4 στέργω stergo which is to cherish. It is used in the negative use 2 times in the New Testament (ἄστοργος astorgos).
C1 Romans 1:31 NKJV Undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful. Another translation: Romans 1:31 GW Don't have any sense, don't keep promises, and don't show love to their own families or mercy to others.
C2 2 Timothy 3:3 NKJV Unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good. Another translation: 2 Timothy 3:3 GW And lack normal affection for their families. They will refuse to make peace with anyone. They will be slanderous, lack self-control, be brutal, and have no love for what is good.
A5 Some pointers, think about it.
B1 Turn media off, put the phone down, take the earbuds out.
B2 Turn your eyes, ears, and attention to your spouse. Her opinion is most likely better than yours.
B3 Your wife does NOT need a strong hand to lead her. Just. Stop. That. Kind. Of Thinking.
B4 Listen to her. This is not just looking at her and making mocking expressions pretending to listen. LISTEN!
B5 When you ask a question, wait for an answer. WAIT! In a study with teachers it was found that those who wait at least 3 seconds for an answer improved students attitude. (Source)
B6 There IS A DIFFERENCE between talking TO and talking WITH your child, your spouse, your parent, your brother, your sister, your neighbor.
B7 If you see something that needs to be done, do it. If you see your wife busy and the dishes need washing, wash, dry, and put them away.
B8 Your wife drinks coffee in the morning? Get her cup out for her.
B9 SHOW compassion!
B10 If you are a boss, a manager, a supervisor, do the same for your employees.
B11 If you are an employee, do the same, do the same for your boss.
B12 You can be kind and SHOW you love your wife.
B13 Show love every possible time to glorify God.
B14 As much as possible live in peace with all people.
B15 You will fail at times, but God gives grace.
B16 Memorize 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a and practice doing these things every single day in public and private.

They will refuse to make peace with anyone. They will be slanderous, lack self-control, be brutal, and have no love for what is good.
B3 1 Corinthians 13,
C1 Why is love greater than any of the spiritual gifts or offices?
C2 Having the gift of languages is a wonderful gift that most would admire. Why is love greater?
C3 Having the gift of prophecy and understanding all mysteries about God is something most would definitely crave. Why is love greater?
C4 Who has the faith to move mountains? Why is love greater?
C5 Surely, giving all a person has to help the poor, would be considered a great act of loving selflessness. Why is love greater?
C6 The dedication and loyalty to God by being burned to death would reap rich rewards. Why is love greater?
D1 Daniel 3:28 GW  Nebuchadnezzar said, Praise the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He sent his angel and saved his servants, who trusted him. They disobeyed the king and risked their lives so that they would not have to honor or worship any god except their own God.
D2 2 Corinthians 12:15 NKJV  And I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.
C7 Where does love originate: the body, the soul, or the spirit of a human? Maybe 2 of the 3 or maybe all 3; what do you think?
C8 What does the phrase profits me nothing mean?
C9 How does love make the difference?
C10 Love show itself by
D1 1 Corinthians 13:4-6 NKJV Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth.
D2 Positives:
E1 Why are these positive? What do they indicate?
E2 Suffers long (patient)
E3 Kind
E4 Rejoices in truth (happy with truth)
D3 Negatives:
E1 Why are these negative? What do they indicate?
E2 Not envy (jealous)
E3 Not parade itself (conceited, brag)
E4 Not puffed up (proud, arrogant)
E5 Not rude (ill-mannered, indecent)
E6 Not seek its own (selfish, self seeking, demand its own way)
E7 Not provoked (irritable, easily angered)
E8 Not thinking evil (no record of wrongs)
E9 Not rejoice in iniquity (unhappy with evil, not happy with injustice)
C11 1 Corinthians 13:8 NKJV  Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
D1 Love never fails. The word for fails here is ἐκπίπτω ekpiptō and means fall out, etc. with the idea of being powerless and of flowers that have their withered flower pedals fall off (James 1:11 and 1 Peter 1:24) or shackles falling off the wrists (Acts 12:7).
D2 The word for fail(s) and vanish away for prophecies and knowledge is καταργέω katargeō which means become inoperative, ineffective, done away with, annulled, etc.
D3 So love never falls down, becomes powerless, and it never ends its presence and work.
D4 The other things become inactive.
C12 1 Corinthians 13:9-10 NKJV  For we know in part and we prophesy in part.  10  But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
D1 The word perfect is the Greek word τέλειος teleios which means reached the goal, completed, perfect, etc. The idea is what was to be accomplished has been accomplished.
D2 Interpreters vary on the meaning. Some say it refers to the eternal age when Messiah reigns, some say it refers to when the Scriptures were completed, and some say it refers to when the church is completed (rapture). We do know that the miraculous faded by the time the Apostles were gone (~95 AD).
E1 Why didn’t Paul heal? Philippians 2:25-27 NRSV  Still, I think it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus—my brother and co-worker and fellow soldier, your messenger and minister to my need;  26  for he has been longing for all of you, and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill.  27  He was indeed so ill that he nearly died. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, so that I would not have one sorrow after another. And Philippians 2:30 NKJV  Because for the work of Christ he came close to death, not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me.
E2 The in part will become inactive, too, just like prophecy and knowledge.
C13 1 Corinthians 13:11-12 NKJV  When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.  12  For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
D1 How does our thinking change as we mature?
D2 What does face to face mean?
D3 How will it be, and when will we know as we are known?
C14 1 Corinthians 13:13 NKJV  And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
D1 What is temporary? See 1 Corinthians 13:8.
D2 What is permanent?
D3 Why is love the greatest?
D4 What is the difference between faith and love?
E1 Faith is believing God.
E2 Hope is the expectation of fulfillment of what he promised.
E3 I have faith that Jesus will return, and I hope it is today.
D5 How do we grow, become more mature, in faith, hope, and love?
B4 Next week:
C1 Good news of great joy!
C2 The Greatest Gift
C3 Scriptures: Luke 2:1-21
