Colossians Chapter 3:18-4:1

 

 

A1 Scripture

B1 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. B2 Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, for that is what you should do as Christians. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Children, it is your Christian duty to obey your parents always, for that is what pleases God. Parents, do not irritate your children, or they will become discouraged. Slaves, obey your human masters in all things, not only when they are watching you because you want to gain their approval; but do it with a sincere heart because of your reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people. Remember that the Lord will give you as a reward what he has kept for his people. For Christ is the real Master you serve. And all wrongdoers will be repaid for the wrong things they do, because God judges everyone by the same standard. Masters, be fair and just in the way you treat your slaves. Remember that you too have a Master in heaven. (Colossians 3:18-4:1, GNB92)

B4 Husbands

C1 The word husband in English has the idea of

C2 Are one with their wives (Matthew 19:5)

C3 God wants wives treated well. "Yet you say, "For what reason?" Because the LORD has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, With whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion And your wife by covenant. But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. "For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence," Says the LORD of hosts. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously." (Malachi 2:14-16, NKJV)

D1 The word treacherously means to be unfaithful.

D2 It also has the idea of breaking treaties, agreements, promises, etc.

D3 It even includes ideas as betrayal.

D4 God punishes such. "But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it." (Proverbs 2:22, NKJV)

C4 To love our wives.

D1 Love here is agape.

D2 It is the love of choice and faithfulness.

D3 It is the love of 1 Corinthians 13

D4 It is not necessarily of words but definitely is of actions.

C6 Words and actions do hurt.

C7 Bitterness is not to be a Christian activity or attitude. "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and blasphemy be removed from you, with all malice." (Ephesians 4:31, EMTV)

C8 Some things that make a marriage better.

D1 Listen to your wife. When she is talking, look at her.

D2 Respect her opinion.

D3 Do something nice for her like wash the dishes or vacuum the carpet.

C9 To praise your wife (genuine praise please) especially in public. "Her children show their appreciation, and her husband praises her." (Proverbs 31:28, GNB92)

B5 Children

C1 This would be children at home.

C2 Obey in all things.

D1 Positive aspect--It may save your life.

D2 Negative aspect--do not obey if it is criminal (that is, against God's law) or hurts someone.

D3 Learning to obey helps out in life situations as when the children get a job.

B6 Fathers

C1 Very important in the life of a child.

D1 We are to pity, have compassion on, our children. "As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him." (Psalms 103:13, ESV2011)

D2 Teach children wisdom and right from wrong. "My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother." (Proverbs 1:8, NKJV)

D3 The teaching of restraint and self-control are vital. "Discipline your son, for there is hope; don't be a willing party to his death." (Proverbs 19:18, WEB)

D4 Live what we teach. "Children are fortunate if they have a father who is honest and does what is right." (Proverbs 20:7, GNB92)

B7 Parents

C1 Are not to make their children angry by

D1 Setting unrealistic goals. Demanding too much from them as in expecting a 5 year old to read at the 12th grade level or to have all "A's" in school.

D2 Abuse them in any way.

D3 Let them run wild without learning any self-control.

D4 Lying to them.

D5 Lying about them.

D6 Treat them like they are worthless.

D7 Be inconsistent. Have them obey one rule for one child and the other doesn't have to, or have all obey a rule for a while and then not obey for a while then return to obeying the rule.

D8 Criticize your spouse in front of the children.

D9 Never show love or kindness to your spouse, your children, or the pets.

D10 Never allow them to express their opinion.

D11 When your child asks you why they have to do something tell them, "Because I said so."

D12 Often when a child is hurt frequently (as in abuse or a lack of love), they become bitter. When bitterness goes on and on, they become angry. If the irritant (as abuse or lack of love) continue, it might be hate. If hate remains, it may lead to murder. Consider Absalom, King David's son.

D13 Always tell them what not to do, but never tell them the right way to do something.

D14 Criticize them frequently.

D15 Never listen to them.

D16 Break your promises to them.

D17 Falsely accuse them of something.

D18 Play favorites.

D19 Never praise a child for anything good they do. Always point out there faults and weaknesses.

D20 Never take an interest in what they are doing. For example, they may say to you, "Daddy, look at this pretty picture I drew for you." If your child is doing something special in school, never ask how they are doing, never show up when they do this special thing, never listen to them when they tell you what award or honor they have achieved.

D21 Tell them you hate them.

D22 Tell them they are in your way.

D23 Tell them you wish they were never born.

D24 Never be sympathetic or empathetic.

D25 Have your child be your therapist as in telling them all your worries, fears, sins, etc.

D26 Overprotect your child.

D27 Never let your child experience failure. Always cover up for their mistakes and blame someone else.

D28 Never let your child make a decision. Make all their decisions for them.

D29 Don't do anything with your child. Maybe you like fishing, so don't take them with you. Maybe they like fishing, so don't take them fishing.

D32 Tease them about their looks.

F2 "Now when the angel who had been speaking to Cornelius had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually." (Acts 10:7, EMTV) (Bold is the word for household servant--οἰκέτης (oiketēs).

F1 The difference between servants and slaves.

G1 The word slave in English engenders the torture and treatment of the Old South and her plantations.

G2 The word servant in English gives the idea of being an employee serving another person.

G3 The word servant in Greek has the idea of dependence on a Lord.

G4 While some Greek servants were mistreated, it would be no different than modern workers who are mistreated by their employers.

G5 The "Greeks have a strong sense of freedom. Personal dignity consists of freedom. There is thus a violent aversion to bondage. Service may be rendered to the state, but by free choice. Slavery is scorned and rejected. This explains the fierceness with which the Greeks fought for political independence. The only slavery Plato will allow is to the laws. The laws, however, represent the goal of humanity, so that slavery to law is in no way derogatory. Aristotle shows a similar scorn for slavery; for him slaves have no part in the state or true service to it. The Stoics have a broader view of service. Zeus himself summons us to it, so that, while free in relation to all people, we are unconditionally bound to all. Yet the Stoic would never call himself the doúlos theoú; he moves through the world as basileús and despótēs, the very opposite of the doúlos. This is the characteristic of the wise. Those who are not wise are slaves, no matter what the form of their bondage (cf. Epictetus, Plutarch, and Philo)." D2 If would seem unlikely that the Apostles who designate themselves as servants would consider themselves slaves as understood by modern English readers. "Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 1:1, WEB)

Commentary: Colossians 3:12-17

Colossians 3:12-17 Relationship between believers

B1 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

B2 You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you. And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things together in perfect unity. The peace that Christ gives is to guide you in the decisions you make; for it is to this peace that God has called you together in the one body. And be thankful. Christ's message in all its richness must live in your hearts. Teach and instruct one another with all wisdom. Sing psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing to God with thanksgiving in your hearts. E1 Kindness is a form of gentleness.

E1 Humility is to think of ourselves honestly.

E1 Meekness is not to push our rights (supposed and actual).

E2 It is NOT to put up with evil, so called tolerance, bullying, or manipulation.

E3 It is an attitude of not being pushy in relationships of any type.

D5 Longsuffering

E1 It is putting up with situations as a someone sickness and still treating them gently and kindly.

E2 It is not reacting when someone is venting.

E3 It is being patient.

E4 It is NOT being easily provoked.

E5 It is to get angry slowly rather than instantly being in rage.

E6 It is a form of love in action.

E7 It is NOT putting up with words and actions that are damaging emotionally, financially, physically, etc.

E8 It is accepting God's will if He allows suffering and persecution (as the Lord Jesus demonstrated in His trials).

D6 Forbearing (Colossians 3:13)

E1 Forbearing is a ceasing or pausing of action or reaction to people for a time.

E2 It is to back off something for a while.

D7 Forgive

E1 God forgave us

E2 We should forgive others

E3 Forgiveness is for humans to turn over all revenge, penalty, judgment to God to deal with. He may punish or convict. If one is convicted of their evil, then they can repent and ask God for forgiveness.

E4 Jesus paid the penalty for sin by suffering for our sins. When He forgives, it is pardon, because the penalty has been paid.

D8 Love (Colossians 3:14)

E1 Love is a choice, attitude, with or without emotion, passion, etc.

E2 Love is many things in action as seen in 1 Corinthians 13.

B3 Peace of God (Colossians 3:15)

C1 Peace is calmness, rest, freedom from physical, emotional, or spiritual discomfort.

C2 There are types of peace as peace in the world, peace with others, etc.

C3 There are types of false peace as suppressing them emotionally or in drugs and alcohol, etc.

C4 Peace of God is the peace that God gives. "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27, EMTV)

B4 In your hearts (Colossians 3:15)

C1 Our deepest place in our inner life.

C2 The source of motivation, attitude, desires, even evil.

C3 When God gives peace it is into our hearts.

C4 Therefore whatever we face in life can be handled because that peace, God's peace, is in our hearts, and He will be there also.

C5 To rule means to be the deciding factor, the umpire, for our competing feelings, emotions, etc.

B5 One body (Colossians 3:15) All Christians are one body, one group, one family, and comrades in life.

B6 Thankful (Colossians 3:15).

C1 Thankfulness is telling or showing someone appreciation for what they have done or said.

C2 We are to be thankful to God for many things especially His mercy and in meeting our daily needs.

C3 We are to be thankful to the brethren, to the church, to our neighbors, and to all we meet as much as is possible.

B7 Word of Christ (Colossians 3:16)

C1 Has the idea of the teachings that the Lord Jesus gave us.

C2 This would be the opposite of our dwelling of the teachings of the age.

C1 The teachings of the Lord Jesus are to be abundant in our life.

C2 In wisdom--thinking God's way, so taking the teachings in their plain, normal sense and basing our decisions on them.

B1 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been rooted and built up in Him and being established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. See that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and in Him you have been made complete, who is the head of all principality and power. In whom you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by the putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried together with Him in baptism, in which also you were raised together through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. B2 Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him. Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith, as you were taught. And on that cross Christ freed himself from the power of the spiritual rulers and authorities; he made a public spectacle of them by leading them as captives in his victory procession. C1 Captive is a loss of freedom. It is being enslaved by something. God gives up libertarian freedom, not exhaustive determinism. The idea also carries the idea of stealing something from a person.

D1 The word is has the idea of using man's ideas through using science, logic and rhetoric.

D2 It is totalitarian science.

D3 It is the idea that science as all the answers.

D4 Using persuasive speech, false promises, lies in the name of science to control all people.

B6 Colossians 2:11

C1 Circumcision made without hands.

D1 The circumcision done by God on the evil, unregenerated heart.

D2 "...but he is a Jew that is one inwardly; and circumcision is of the heart, in the spirit, not in the letter, whose praise is not from men but from God." (Romans 2:29, EMTV)

D3 For we are the true circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh, (Philippians 3:3, EMTV)

C2 Christ performed this circumcision, not a human, Jewish priest or physician.

C3 Sin and its effects are now cut off and throw away.

C1 Baptism is an image, illustration, of burial and resurrection. Jesus did this literally; we do this to illustrate what He has done for us.

C2 All this is through faith. Faith is believing God. What God says is true and if we agree with Him, especially when we are wrong, it is faith. For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." (Romans 4:3, EMTV)

B8 Colossians 2:13

C1 Dead in trespasses.

D1 Really dead. Because of sin we do not seek God. There is nothing in us that is good. We cannot seek God.

D2 Trespasses are breaking God's law.

C2 Uncircumcision of flesh

D1 There is nothing good in us or about us.

D2 We need someone to remove this load of sins.

C3 Alive together

D1 The same process.

D2 The rebirth.

D3 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name; (John 1:12, EMTV)

C4 Having forgiven us all trespasses

D1 Our sins are forgiven.

D2 We are justified.

D3 We are pardoned.

D4 The penalty was paid by Christ. The conditions and plan were from God. The opening of our heart and mind was of God. We only did not resist when God gave the command to repent.

D5 The atonement by Jesus shows that God's Law was righteous (Jesus did die). It also shows God's love for humans in that there is the provision for sin if the sinner meets the conditions.

D6 We are not sinless but forgiven. The penalty of God's law, hell, is now removed.

D7 No one deserves forgiveness. It is not a right. It is a free gift. It cost Jesus everything however.

D8 Faith, as God defines it, is the condition to be met.

B9 Colossians 2:14

C1 Blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us

D1 Blotted out means that it was overwritten. The original cannot be seen any more.

D2 The handwriting of ordinances was the miles long list of our sins.

D3 God did this out of love. Jesus choose to be the Passover Lamb for us.

C2 Nailed it

D1 When Jesus died, He paid the full penalty and punishment for sin.

D2 He did not go to hell and suffer there for our sins (some heretics teach this).

D3 This long list had written on it, in a sense, "Paid in full."

B10 Colossians 2:15

C1 Disarmed

D1 He freed Himself from the demonic and human authorities.

D2 He was a victor over these evil ones.

D3 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, (Hebrews 2:14, ESV2011)

C2 Mocked them

D1 They thought they had killed God, made Him a loser (He did not accomplish what He set out to do), and make Him look like a weak fool.

D2 He rose from the dead in triumph. He is victor over death or sin's penalty. He accomplished all that God wanted.

D3 This is the open shame. The smile of triumph and victory from the evil beings was turned upside down.

C3 Triumphing

D1 God never loses. Even when it seems like it, He turns it all around and is the Victor.

D2 He let them do it. They thought they did it. God used them and their openly evil actions, so show the complete loss of evil's war.

D3 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors. (Isaiah 53:12, NKJV)
