How to make your children angry

Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. (Colossians 3:21, EMTV)

Here are 32 ways to make your child(ren) angry.

1 Setting unrealistic goals. Demanding too much from them as in expecting a 5 year old to read at the 12th grade level or to have all "A's" in school.

2 Abuse them in any way.

3 Let them run wild without learning any self-control.

4 Lying to them.

5 Lying about them.

6 Treat them like they are worthless.

7 Be inconsistent. Have them obey one rule for one child and the other doesn't have to, or have all obey a rule for a while and then not obey for a while then return to obeying the rule.

8 Criticize your spouse in front of the children.

9 Never show love or kindness to your spouse, your children, or the pets.

10 Never allow them to express their opinion.

11 When your child asks you why they have to do something tell them, "Because I said so."

12 Often when a child is hurt frequently (as in abuse or a lack of love), they become bitter. When bitterness goes on and on, they become angry. If the irritant (as abuse or lack of love) continue, it might be hate. If hate remains, it may lead to murder. Consider Absalom, King David's son.

13 Always tell them what not to do, but never tell them the right way to do something.

14 Criticize them frequently.

15 Never listen to them.

16 Break your promises to them.

17 Falsely accuse them of something.

18 Play favorites.

19 Never praise a child for anything good they do. Always point out there faults and weaknesses.

20 Never take an interest in what they are doing. For example, they may say to you, "Daddy, look at this pretty picture I drew for you." If your child is doing something special in school, never ask how they are doing, never show up when they do this special thing, never listen to them when they tell you what award or honor they have achieved.

21 Tell them you hate them.

22 Tell them they are in your way.

23 Tell them you wish they were never born.

24 Never be sympathetic or empathetic.

25 Have your child be your therapist as in telling them all your worries, fears, sins, etc.

26 Overprotect your child.

27 Never let your child experience failure. Always cover up for their mistakes and blame someone else.

28 Never let your child make a decision. Make all their decisions for them.

29 Don't do anything with your child. Maybe you like fishing, so don't take them with you. Maybe they like fishing, so don't take them fishing.

30 Yell at them a lot.

31 Be arrogant.

32 Tease them about their looks.

Submission

Submission

B1 Wives, subject yourselves to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. (Colossians 3:18, EMTV)

B2 A controversial subject

B3 Submit (Colossians 3:18)

C1 Not as a slave with no rights.

C2 But a yielding to the higher authority.

C3 Someone has to have the last word.

C4 The word means "under another".

D1 Instead of pushing for superiority, dominance, and bullying,

D2 Has the idea of willing to acknowledge the better opinion of another.

D3 The idea of amenable, docile, open (to another's opinion).

"ready or willing to answer, act, agree, or yield; open to influence, persuasion, or advice; agreeable; submissive; tractable:

an amenable servant."--amenable. (n.d.). Dictionary.com Unabridged. Retrieved March 17, 2015, from Dictionary.com website: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/amenable

C5 This does NOT mean a woman is second rate. Consider

D1 Eve is called the "Mother of all living."

D2 Miriam is called a prophetess.

D3 Deborah is a judge in Israel.

D4 Mary, the mother of Jesus.

D5 The first human witnesses of the resurrected Jesus were women.

D6 The deacon Phillip had daughters who were recognized as prophetesses.

C6 God has a very high opinion of women.

SUBMIT YOURSELVES TO GOD—from the book Handfuls on Purpose, Smith, James and Lee, Robert, Public domain

James 4:6-7

Man, away from God, is represented as an enemy and a rebel.

I. What is not Submission. A man has not submitted to God as long as he is-

1. In a State of Indifference. Like Gallio, caring for none of these things (Acts 18:17).

2. Living only for Self. Desiring his own praise and honor.

3. Seeking to Please Men. Satisfied with an outward appearance.

4. Loving the World. If the world is in the heart, it is still an enemy to God.

II. To Whom we should submit. To God.

1. Because He hath made us. Our Creator.

2. Because He hath sent His Son to save us (John 3:16).

3. Because He hath given His Spirit to quicken and comfort us.

4. Because He hath given His Word to guide and assure us.

III. What is to be submitted? "Yourselves." This implies-

(1) Your will and affections. (2) Your time and talents. (3) Your plans and purposes. (4) Your pleasures and possessions. (5) Your cares and anxieties.

IV. Why you ought to Submit. "Submit therefore" (Matthew 25:7)-

1. Because God resists the proud-sets Himself against those who rebel against Him. It is vain to hope to succeed in the face of a resisting God.

2. Because God giveth grace to the humble. Those who submit will receive grace sufficient to pardon, to reconcile, to keep, to satisfy, and to bring into the presence of His glory (Psalms 138:6).

Commentary: Colossians 3:12-17

Colossians 3:12-17 Relationship between believers

A1 Scripture

B1 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

(Colossians 3:12-17 NKJV)

B2 You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you. And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things together in perfect unity. The peace that Christ gives is to guide you in the decisions you make; for it is to this peace that God has called you together in the one body. And be thankful. Christ's message in all its richness must live in your hearts. Teach and instruct one another with all wisdom. Sing psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing to God with thanksgiving in your hearts. Everything you do or say, then, should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, as you give thanks through him to God the Father.

(Colossians 3:12-17 GNB)

A3 Notes

B1 Saint

C1 Defined

D1 Child of God.

D2 All born again Christians are saints.

C2 Described

D1 Holy

E1 Has to do with "dedicated to the gods."

E2 One which is dedicated to the God, Yahweh, would be of a certain character.

E3 Morally and spiritually blameless.

E4 Separated for God's service.

E5 Such a person (holy because of the work of God in their heart) is holy because of God's mercy and love. If there was no prevenient grace, there would be no saved and holy people.

D2 Beloved

E1 Because these obey the call, repented, and trusted into Jesus Christ.

E2 Christians are more loved by God because of this.

E3 John Wesley in his comment on Colossians 3:12 writes, "All who are thus renewed are elected of God, holy, and therefore the more beloved of him. Holiness is the consequence of their election, and God's superior love, of their holiness."

B2 Put on

C1 This is in contrast to the things that we are to put off (Colossians 3:8).

C2 The list presented here would be good for any society.

C3 The list presented here is rare in society as the human heart is evil.

C4 The list presented here is important because it reflects the character of God and His way of life.

C5 The list presented here is important for us today, because it is the way of life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

C6 The list

D1 Tender mercies

E1 Mercy is not receiving what we deserve.

E2 It is for those things which we possible can overlook. Some things cannot be overlooked as those things which might endanger our or others' lives and well-being as verbal abuse, physical abuse, elder abuse, neglect, financial abuse, etc.

E3 It is for those things when someone genuinely asks for forgiveness.

E4 It is what God does to us when we ask forgiveness.

D2 Kindness

E1 Kindness is a form of gentleness.

E2 It is being nice to someone.

E3 It is the opposite of rough treatment, words, thoughts, etc.

D3 Humility

E1 Humility is to think of ourselves honestly.

E2 It is to NOT think of ourselves as the greatest, best, most intelligent, etc.

E3 It is NOT to think of ourselves as pretending we are nothing.

E4 It is listening to another's opinion or thoughts, then weighing that information before making a decision.

D4 Meekness

E1 Meekness is not to push our rights (supposed and actual).

E2 It is NOT to put up with evil, so called tolerance, bullying, or manipulation.

E3 It is an attitude of not being pushy in relationships of any type.

D5 Longsuffering

E1 It is putting up with situations as a someone sickness and still treating them gently and kindly.

E2 It is not reacting when someone is venting.

E3 It is being patient.

E4 It is NOT being easily provoked.

E5 It is to get angry slowly rather than instantly being in rage.

E6 It is a form of love in action.

E7 It is NOT putting up with words and actions that are damaging emotionally, financially, physically, etc.

E8 It is accepting God's will if He allows suffering and persecution (as the Lord Jesus demonstrated in His trials).

D6 Forbearing (Colossians 3:13)

E1 Forbearing is a ceasing or pausing of action or reaction to people for a time.

E2 It is to back off something for a while.

D7 Forgive

E1 God forgave us

E2 We should forgive others

E3 Forgiveness is for humans to turn over all revenge, penalty, judgment to God to deal with. He may punish or convict. If one is convicted of their evil, then they can repent and ask God for forgiveness.

E4 Jesus paid the penalty for sin by suffering for our sins. When He forgives, it is pardon, because the penalty has been paid.

D8 Love (Colossians 3:14)

E1 Love is a choice, attitude, with or without emotion, passion, etc.

E2 Love is many things in action as seen in 1 Corinthians 13.

B3 Peace of God (Colossians 3:15)

C1 Peace is calmness, rest, freedom from physical, emotional, or spiritual discomfort.

C2 There are types of peace as peace in the world, peace with others, etc.

C3 There are types of false peace as suppressing them emotionally or in drugs and alcohol, etc.

C4 Peace of God is the peace that God gives. "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27, EMTV)

B4 In your hearts (Colossians 3:15)

C1 Our deepest place in our inner life.

C2 The source of motivation, attitude, desires, even evil.

C3 When God gives peace it is into our hearts.

C4 Therefore whatever we face in life can be handled because that peace, God's peace, is in our hearts, and He will be there also.

C5 To rule means to be the deciding factor, the umpire, for our competing feelings, emotions, etc.

B5 One body (Colossians 3:15) All Christians are one body, one group, one family, and comrades in life.

B6 Thankful (Colossians 3:15).

C1 Thankfulness is telling or showing someone appreciation for what they have done or said.

C2 We are to be thankful to God for many things especially His mercy and in meeting our daily needs.

C3 We are to be thankful to the brethren, to the church, to our neighbors, and to all we meet as much as is possible.

B7 Word of Christ (Colossians 3:16)

C1 Has the idea of the teachings that the Lord Jesus gave us.

C2 This would be the opposite of our dwelling of the teachings of the age.

B8 Richly--much, a lot of

B9 Wisdom, teaching, and admonishing

C1 The teachings of the Lord Jesus are to be abundant in our life.

C2 In wisdom--thinking God's way, so taking the teachings in their plain, normal sense and basing our decisions on them.

C3 In teaching--what we teach others.

C4 In admonishing--that is in encouraging others in their Christian walk.

D1 Three ways of doing the admonishing is through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. "Teaching Through Music"

E1 Psalms--music set to a Psalm and sung.

E2 Hymns--teaching a doctrine.

It Should Have Been Me (with Ron Hurst)

© 1978 Dan Simmons Author: words & music: Dan Simmons

It was my sin that brought Him there and nailed Him to that tree...It was my pain that He would bear the stripes were meant for me... It was my guilt, my shameful blindness that brought Him to that place...Yet it was love, tender loving kindness that brought the fullness of God's grace

It was judgment and punishment that brought Him agony...I was condemned to die, bound up in chains 'til Jesus set me free...Crucified in shame, hanging there on a cross between two thieves...He showed me just how much He cared, the day that Jesus died for me

All the way up to Calvary, He walked there in my place...Every step up that mountain steep was a step of love and grace... As my Savior He died on that cruel and rugged tree... O, yes but it should have been me

From His heaven from His holy throne, He came to bear my hell...Of such love and grace and mercy shown no tongue could ever tell... And someday I'll stand before Him and I'll see Him face to face... I will worship and adore Him for the day He took my place

And all the way up to Calvary, He walked there in my place...Every step up that mountain steep was a step of love and grace... As my Savior He died on that cruel and rugged tree... O, yes but it should have been me

O, yes but it should have... it should have been me....O, yes but it should have been me

E4 Spiritual Songs--songs teaching encouragement, etc.

Hold Me Jesus--Ronnie Lee Hurst

Well, I've been trav'lin' down a long road

Through a dry and weary land

HOLD ME JESUS

And I've been stumblin' on the way Lord

Over things I just don't understand

I've been wastin' precious moments

On this burnt out, selfish man

Help me Jesus, hold me Jesus in Your hand

And I've been walkin' through some hard times

That have cut me to the soul

And I've been searchin' for some answers

Though the questions, I don't know

I've been wondering through this desert

And all I feel is scorching sand

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus in Your hand

Hold me Jesus...hold me Jesus

Lift me up Lord...help me stand

Lord I need us to walk together through this land

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus in Your hand

Hold me Jesus...hold me Jesus

Lift me up Lord...help me stand

Lord I need us to walk together through this land

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus in Your hand

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus in Your hand

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus ...

In Your hand

D2 Music can be used to teach doctrine and encouragement.

D3 Songs that lead us into a nearly trancelike experience are NOT doing this.

B10 Word and action (Colossians 3:17)

C1 Everything we do should be glorifying to God.

C2 Our words, thoughts, desires, and actions should show the world that we are Christians.

C3 "Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it shines on everything in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:15-16, EMTV)

C4 What we do and how we do it is noticed by people.

D1 Negatively as hypocrites.

E1 ""Moreover, when you fast, do not become gloomy, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly I say to you, that they receive their reward in full." (Matthew 6:16, EMTV)

E2 "But all their works they do in order to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and they enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the first couch at banquets, and the best seats in the synagogues," (Matthew 23:5-6, EMTV)

D2 Positively as being genuine

E1 "Now in Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which, being translated, means Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable giving which she was doing." (Acts 9:36, EMTV)

E2 "Then Jesus answered and said: "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and encountered bandits, who after having stripped him of his clothing and having wounded him, departed, leaving him half dead. Now by coincidence a certain priest was coming down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite, arriving at the place, came and saw, and passed by on the opposite side. But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled, came by him; and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion. And coming to him, he bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and putting him on his own animal, he brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, 'Take care of him; and whatever you spend in addition, when I come back, I will repay you.' So which of these three does it seem to you proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the bandits?" And he said, "the one who showed mercy to him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." (Luke 10:30-37, EMTV)

Is It Right to Shame People?

Is It Right to Shame People?

People have the tendency to want revenge. They may seek revenge by physical, emotional, verbal, or financial means. They may use sarcasm or shade the truth by emphasizing those details they want to prove their point.

There is, however, a down side to it.

There article shows the downside of shaming customers who give a negative review or perhaps a low tip. 5 Reasons Restaurants Should Think Twice About Shaming Bad Customers. Reasons like "The satisfaction is usually temporary, and often not worth it" as this may lead to backfiring when more details are known.

An application can be made to Christians. Do we seek revenge by shaming someone?

There are some problems.

  1. What are the facts (truth)?
  2. Why do you/I want to do this?
  3. Is it right in God's view?

What does the Bible say?

  1. It is not our place. "Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God's anger do it. For the scripture says, "I will take revenge, I will pay back, says the Lord." (Romans 12:19, GNB92)
  2. We should one for that person to repent, so we are to treat our enemies with kindness. "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. If anyone hits you on one cheek, let him hit the other one too; if someone takes your coat, let him have your shirt as well." (Luke 6:27-29, GNB92)
  3. It smacks of pride as if we are the Judge. Maybe they will repent. "So watch what you do! "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in one day, and each time he comes to you saying, 'I repent,' you must forgive him." (Luke 17:3-4, GNB92)
  4. We might ourselves guilty of bad behavior ourselves. "Why, then, do you look at the speck in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the log in your own eye? How dare you say to your brother, 'Please, let me take that speck out of your eye,' when you have a log in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will be able to see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." (Matthew 7:3-5, GNB92)
  5. We need to make things right with our brethren. "So if you are about to offer your gift to God at the altar and there you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with your brother, and then come back and offer your gift to God. (Matthew 5:23-24, GNB92)

Shaming people is a form of manipulation and is wrong. We must not do it. There are better ways of dealing with conflicts. "Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody." (Romans 12:18, GNB92)

A4 Questions

B1 Why did these Jews get so angry?

C1 Their pet interpretation was a physical one.

D1 Plenty of money

D2 Plenty of food

D3 Plenty of health

D4 Plenty of freedom

C2 Jesus wanted them to know the truth. This is a prophecy about Messiah and His spiritual kingdom.

D1 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. (Romans 13:14)

D2 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Romans 14:17)

D3 Jews and Gentiles are to be in God's Kingdom.

B2 Why did they want to kill Jesus?

B3 What became of their attempt? (He passed through their midst).

B4 Do people today get angry at the Gospel?

B5 Do most people, even Christians, understand the Gospel?

B6 When Jesus said, "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing," did Jesus exaggerate?

B7 In Luke 4:18, the Lord has _______________ me. What does anointed me mean in this context? (Specially chosen and gifted by God to do a commissioned work)

B8 What was Jesus anointed to do? (Preach the Gospel). So we know that what Jesus was preaching is the Gospel.

C1 "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise." (Proverbs 12:15)

C2 "Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts." (Proverbs 21:2)

C3 "One can see the results of doing this. In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes." (Judges 21:25)

B10 What was sent out to do?

C1 Heal brokenhearted.

D1 Most modern translations leave these words out.

D2 Wilbur Pickering informs us that only 1.5% of Greek manuscripts leave these words out, thus 98.5% have these words.

D3 Who are the brokenhearted?

C2 Proclaim liberty to the captives.

D1 What liberty is this?

E1 "...because even the creation itself shall be freed from the slavery of corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

(Romans 8:21)

E2 "Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." (2 Corinthians 3:17)

E3 "...and that was because of false brothers secretly brought in (who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might reduce us to slavery)." (Galatians 2:4)

E4 "Stand fast therefore in the freedom in which Christ has made us free, and do not be loaded down again with a yoke of bondage."

(Galatians 5:1)

E5 "For you, brothers were called to freedom; only do not use freedom for an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another."

(Galatians 5:13)

D2 Who are the captives?

E1 Sin

F1 Before salvation, our self and our choice is first.

F2 After salvation, then doing what God wants is first.

F3 "But I see a different law in my members, waging war against the law of my mind, and capturing me by the law of sin which is in my members." (Romans 7:23)

F4 "For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin." (Ecclesiastes 7:20)

F5 "For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish." (Galatians 5:17)

E2 Devil

F1 "...and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will."

(2 Timothy 2:26)

F2 "And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him," (John 13:2)

C3 Open prison to those who are imprisoned, bond, tied up, and chained.

D1 What is this prison?

E1 Natural humanity is going to hell.

E2 "...and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, 'You will be made free'?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:32-36)

E3 "...to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die; (Psalms 102:20)

E4 Some interpret it to be the prison of darkness, that is, spiritual darkness. "...to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness." (Isaiah 42:7)

D2 Can any human open the doors of such a prison?

C4 To proclaim--speak out, teach, tell others

D1 The acceptable year of the Lord.

E1 God has initiated salvation. He has opened the hearts and eyes of every person. It is at that point that the time is acceptable. Any person can then resist or not resist the Gospel call.

E2 "And working together with Him, we also urge that you not receive the grace of God in vain. For He says: "In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you." Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." (2 Corinthians 6:1-2)

D2 The day of vengeance of our God. This is in the Isaiah passage, but our Lord did NOT quote this. The reason is that Jesus's first coming was for salvation, the next for punishment.

E1 Speaking of Messiah. "The Lord is at Your right hand; He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath. He shall judge among the nations, He shall fill the places with dead bodies, He shall execute the heads of many countries." (Psalms 110:5-6)

E2 Speaking of God's judgment and punishment for the world. "...and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

(2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)

C5 To comfort all who mourn.

D1 All those who mourn and repent.

D2 Compare--"To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified." (Isaiah 61:3)

B11 Was that prophecy/passage in Isaiah fulfilled? In what way?

B12 Why aren't prophets accepted in the hometown?

B13 Why are these two Gentiles mentioned in Jesus's sermon?

C1 Jesus wanted to show the Jews that God loves the Gentiles.

C2 Jesus wanted them to know the truth.

C3 Jesus spoke the truth, not some words that THEY would want to hear.

B14 What does "passed through their midst" mean?

C1 The people wanted a miracle, so here it is.

C2 We cannot assume that the people were blinded or that the Lord Jesus became invisible.

C3 Possibly the same as "But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not recognize Him." (Luke 24:16, EMTV)

B15 Why didn't Jesus "pass through their midst" earlier, instead of waiting until having been dragged out of the synagogue?

B16 Why do people reject Christ?

C1 They don't like who Jesus is.

C2 They think they are a good person. They think that they do not need a savior.

C3 They don't like His authority.

C4 They don't want Him to be their King or obey His rules.

C5 They fear persecution, ridicule, loss of life, job, family, money, position, authority, respect, etc.

C6 They love something else more like money, power, fame, their addictions to fun, etc. They love their sin.

C7 They feel God loves everyone.

C8 They want to be the boss of their lives.

C9 They cannot believe that God would send someone to hell.

C10 They blame God for their wrong choices. "Why would God let such and such happen to me?"

C11 They are a false convert. They have a wrong definition of what a Christian is.

D1 Christianity is only cultural. "I was born in a Christian country, so I am a Christian."

D2 Christianity was the home religion, the religion of their parents. "I grew up in a Christian home, so I am a Christian."

C12 They feel/believe that their religion is correct or superior.

C13 It isn't logical.

D1 Christianity is a reasonable faith.

D2 Christianity is not a blind faith.

B17 How do we respond to those who reject Christ?

B18 Why did the Samaritan woman accept Christ?

C1 She did believe what Jesus said.

C2 So did many of the Samaritans. "And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman testifying, "He told me everything I ever did." (John 4:39, EMTV)

B19 Do all religions lead to the same place?

B20 Is Yahweh and Allah the same God as many say?

C1 Allah has no son; Yahweh has a Son.

C2 Islam--Jesus is a prophet. Christianity--Jesus is God the Son and the redeemer.

C3 Islam--Allah did not die for humanity. Christianity--Jesus, God's son, did die for humanity.

Colossians 3:1-11

Colossians Chapter 3:1-11

A1 Scripture

B1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life has been hidden with Christ in God. Whenever Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Therefore put to death your members on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. Because of which things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: wrath, anger, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have laid aside the old man with his practices, and have put on the new man who is renewed in full knowledge according to the image of Him who created it, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. (Colossians 3:1-11, EMTV)

B2 You have been raised to life with Christ, so set your hearts on the things that are in heaven, where Christ sits on his throne at the right side of God. Keep your minds fixed on things there, not on things here on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Your real life is Christ and when he appears, then you too will appear with him and share his glory! You must put to death, then, the earthly desires at work in you, such as sexual immorality, indecency, lust, evil passions, and greed (for greed is a form of idolatry). Because of such things God's anger will come upon those who do not obey him. At one time you yourselves used to live according to such desires, when your life was dominated by them. But now you must get rid of all these things: anger, passion, and hateful feelings. No insults or obscene talk must ever come from your lips. Do not lie to one another, for you have put off the old self with its habits and have put on the new self. This is the new being which God, its Creator, is constantly renewing in his own image, in order to bring you to a full knowledge of himself. As a result, there is no longer any distinction between Gentiles and Jews, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarians, savages, slaves, and free, but Christ is all, Christ is in all. (Colossians 3:1-11, GNB92)

A2 Outline

B1 Resurrected with Christ

B2 Resolved on Christ

B3 Responsibility with Christ

B4 Renewed in Christ

A3 Notes

B1 Raised (Colossians 3:1)

C1 This has to do with our spiritual resurrection.

D1 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4, EMTV)

D2 "Having been buried together with Him in baptism, in which also you were raised together through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. (Colossians 2:12, EMTV)

D3 This is the resurrection of a new life. The old fleshly heart that sought to live according to self, now is a new heart that seeks to live according to God's rules.

D4 This only happens to those who believe God and have been given a new heart.

C2 Physical resurrection

D1 This happens to both the unsaved and the saved.

E1 "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear His voice and shall come forth--those who have done good, to a resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to a resurrection of condemnation." (John 5:28-29 EMTV)

E2 "Having hope in God, which even they themselves are waiting for, that there is going to be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust." (Acts 24:15 EMTV)

E3 "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all will be made alive." (1 Corinthians 15:22 EMTV)

D2 The unsaved

E1 "And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt."

(Daniel 12:2 NKJV)

E2 "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation." (John 5:28-29 NKJV)

D3 The saved

E1 "And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt."

(Daniel 12:2 NKJV)

E2 "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation." (John 5:28-29 NKJV)

E3 "Who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself." (Philippians 3:21 NKJV)

E4 "For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord."

(1 Thessalonians 4:14-17 NKJV)

B2 Above (Colossians 3:2)

C1 We are to seek the things which are above.

D1 This would be God's rules from God's kingdom--the Kingdom of Heaven.

D2 The seeking is important. What we seek for is what we desire. If we desire the things of heaven, it will change us. If we desire the things of earth, it will leave us where we are.

C2 Sitting at the right hand of God

D1 Identifies the "above."

D2 Jesus is a separate person from the Father

D3 This is heaven itself

B3 Set your mind (Colossians 3:2)

C1 Infers continuous thinking about.

C2 Infers a high priority.

C3 What we think about is important

B4 Not on things of the earth (Colossians 3:2)

C1 We do think of things on the earth as food, clothes, etc.

C2 We have a priority to think about heaven's things.

C3 Thinking about heaven's things often provides a solution for the problems we face on earth.

D1 We may be despondent, but we can pray.

D2 We may be sick, but we can rejoice that someday we will not.

D3 We may be threatened, but we can forgive our enemies, pray for them, and be kind to them.

B5 Why are these things so? He is referring to Seeking and Setting our mind. (Colossians 3:3)

C1 "You died and your life is hidden with God."

D1 When Christ Jesus died, we died with Him.

D2 It refers to the old heart, the old man, the old nature that died.

D3 The new heart is the new creation of God. (Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17, EMTV)

C2 Christ is coming back again.

D1 He promised. (who also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you watched Him go into heaven." (Acts 1:11, EMTV).

D2 We will find ourselves with Him. (Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we shall always be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:17, EMTV).

D3 We will not be living here anymore.

C3 We are citizens of the Heavenly Kingdom, so we might as well start living by the rules of that kingdom while we are living on earth. (For our citizenship exists in heaven, from which also we eagerly await for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body, that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subject all things to Himself. (Philippians 3:20-21, EMTV).

B6 Put to death (Colossians 3:3)

C1 So that the following things will not be seen in our life.

C2 If I put to death a drug addiction, say, then that addiction has died.

B7 Appear (Colossians 3:4)

C1 This must be read with Colossians 3:3.

C2 Jesus is going to come back again.

C3 Since He died and was raised to life. we also die and must be raised to life.

C4 If rising again, then we will appear alongside Jesus.

D1 "But each one in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then those who belong to Christ at His coming." (1 Corinthians 15:23 EMTV)

D2 "For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord shall by no means precede those who are dead. Because the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord." (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 EMTV)

B8 The list of some things we must put to death (with God's help). (Colossians 3:5)

C1 Sexual immorality--both in the mind and in body.

C2 Uncleanness--anything that dirties our minds, souls, and bodies. This could be physical as in sexual, mental as in porn, spiritual as in idolatry.

C3 Passion--refers to a zest, impulsiveness, and non-thinking spontaneous activity to anything God would disapprove of as sexual, assault, etc.

C4 Evil desire--desires, wishes, etc. that God does not approve of as hurting someone, lying about someone, etc.

C5 Greed, which is idolatry--money becomes first place in a person's life. It is was they think about and seek first of all. It is unfulfilled, there is never enough. It can be money, lands, houses, or things.

B9 Wrath of God (Colossians 3:6)

C1 He disapproves of these things, which are listed.

C2 See Exodus 20:1-17, the Ten Commandments.

B10 Walked in them (Colossians 3:7)

C1 This is the way we lived either in person or in our minds.

C2 The word walk has the idea of living or lifestyle.

B11 Sons of disobedience (Colossians 3:6) Instead of being sons of God, they act and truly are sons of disobedience.

C1 "In which you formerly walked according to the age of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the senses, and were by nature children of wrath, as also the rest." (Ephesians 2:2-3, EMTV)

C2 God's wrath is not something to be slighted. ("...then he shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out undiluted in the cup of His wrath. And they shall be tormented with fire and brimstone before the holy angels and before the Lamb." (Revelation 14:10, EMTV)

B12 Put off. (Colossians 3:8) It is not enough to stop some sins but all sins.

C1 No one can do this perfectly, of course, for we all have sinful thoughts, desires, words, and deeds.

C2 But it is the goal of the Christian to be less like that then the day before, the year before, and the decade before.

C3 We are to grow daily. This is done by Bible reading, study, memorizing. Prayer and worship are also important. These need to be done every day.

B13 The other things to be put off, that is, discarded, thrown away, buried, burned, and so forth. (Colossians 3:8)

C1 Wrath

D1 A very strong emotion of displeasure. and as the Scripture says, "...for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. (James 1:20, EMTV).

D2 The word means a raging emotion of displeasure.

D3 We must remember, however, the Scripture which says, "...for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. (James 1:20, EMTV).

D4 Example--"And looking around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored as whole as the other." (Mark 3:5, EMTV)

C2 Anger

D1 The word means to breath hard. It is used when really angry.

D2 We can see the great anger in this use of the word. Speaking of Jesus, "So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rising up they threw Him out of the city; and brought Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, in order to throw Him down." (Luke 4:28-29, EMTV). It is not best for anyone for God to be angry with them.

C3 Malice

D1 The word means a wish of ill will towards another with a desire to hurt someone.

D2 For example Simon the Great (Simon the magician, Simon Magnus) Repent therefore from this your wickedness, and make petition to God, if perhaps the intent of your heart will be forgiven you. (Acts 8:22, EMTV)

C4 Blasphemy

D1 Disrespectful speech which might include lies, character misrepresentation, mocking, and cursing.

D2 For example, "And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, and His dwelling, and those who dwell in heaven." (Revelation 13:6, EMTV)

C5 Filthy language out of your mouth

D1 The word has to do with obscene speaking.

D2 The would also include verbal abuse.

C6 Do not lie to one another

B14 Since (Colossians 3:9)

C1 This is the reason to lay aside, stop doing, these things.

C2 The old man has been put away.

C3 Since we now have a new created heart (spiritual heart, 2 Corinthians 5:17), we now do not do these.

C4 The old is gone.

C5 "...knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, so that the body of sin may be done away with, that we should no longer serve sin." (Romans 6:6, EMTV)

C6 "And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts." (Galatians 5:24, EMTV)

C7 F. B. Meyer in his comments on this passage writes, "In Christ we profess to have put off the old man, i.e., the habits of our former life, Col_3:9; now let us actually do so, in the power of the Holy Spirit. We profess to have put on the risen Christ, Col_3:10; now let us don the attire and habits of the new man. Too many Christians resemble Lazarus, quickened from his death-sleep, but still arrayed in grave-clothes. Too few array themselves in the radiant beauty of the risen Lord, which is the common heritage of all who believe in Him, whatever their rank or nationality."

B15 Image (Colossians 3:10)

C1 Adam was created in the image of God, so all humans. Adam corrupted this image by sinning.

C2 Christians are recreated in the image of Jesus Christ. Jesus never corrupted this image because He never sinned.

B16 Neither Greek nor Jew, etc. (Colossians 3:11)

C1 We are all Christians.

C2 There are no longer Jewish Christians, Russian Christians, Indian Christians. We are all Christians no matter what language, what nationality, what culture we are one created in the image of Jesus Christ.

C3 Greek nor Jew

D1 The two great divisions according to the Jews.

D2 Jews were special to God and elected to perform a certain ministry.

D3 Gentiles are everyone else.

C4 Circumcised nor uncircumcised

D1 The Jews and Gentiles again.

D2 No special distinguishing mark between them now.

C5 Barbarian

D1 An uncultured person.

D2 As opposed to a cultured person (as Greeks, Romans, etc.)

D3 These would not be considered highly cultured.

C6 Scythian

D1 A nomadic people.

D2 Instead of a settled people.

C7 Slave nor free

C8 Christ is all and in all

D1 This is the wonderful part of being a Christian.

D2 It doesn't make any difference if one is

E1 Rich of poor

E2 Cultured or non-cultured

E3 Intellectual or common

E4 Nobility or peasant.

E5 Or any other comparison.

E6 We are have one leader, one head of the church--Jesus Christ.

E7 We are all the servants of Jesus.
