Final Passover and Betrayal

A1 Objectives

B1 How the final Passover, the Lord's Supper, is a remembrance of Jesus's death.

B2 How Judas's betrayal was part of God's plan.

A2 Scripture

B1 Matthew 26:14-30 The Parable of the Talents

B2 John 18:1-11 Betrayal, arrest, and trial of Jesus

B3 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Institution of the Lord's Supper

A3 Notes

B1 Passover

C1 Initiated, described, regulations thereof given by God for Israel--"This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance." (Exodus 12:14 NRSV)

C2 Named after the "passing over" of the death angel--"...you shall say, 'It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt, when he struck down the Egyptians but spared our houses.'" And the people bowed down and worshiped." (Exodus 12:27 NRSV)

C3 The Hebrew word itself referred to a leaping over of something. Here it would the leaping over of the blood bought household.

C4 The death angel did not kill the first born, if he saw the blood of the sacrificed animal on the door posts. This indicated the death of the substitute. "Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Go, select lambs for your families, and slaughter the Passover lamb. Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood in the basin. None of you shall go outside the door of your house until morning. For the LORD will pass through to strike down the Egyptians; when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over that door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you down." (Exodus 12:21-23 NRSV)

C5 This month became the first month of the new Jewish calendar. It corresponds to March-April.

C6 Ritual

D1 On the 10th day, the special lamb was chosen by the father of the household.

D2 On the 14th day, in the late afternoon the chosen lamb was killed.

D3 When evening started, then the 15th day started.

D4 On this evening the special sacrificial meal was eaten.

E1 Lamb--was not dressed. It was roasted whole. No bones were to be broken.

E2 Bread--made without yeast and dough saved to take with them. No leavened bread was to be eaten for 7 days.

E3 Herbs--bitter herbs.

E4 What was not eaten of lamb was burned to ash the following morning.

D5 The clothes they wore that evening were to be traveling clothes, so they could make a hasty departure.

D6 The Passover was to be celebrated every year.

D7 It was to be at the place God appointed as the place of worship.

D8 All adult males were required to be there.

C7 This could be eaten with another family if the families were small.

C8 Non-Jews could participate if the males were circumcised and recognized by the nation as qualified.

C9 Lasted 1 day.

C10 The Passover of Jesus's time

D1 Had the lamb killed at the Temple.

D2 Could be eaten with friends as well as relatives.

D3 A cup of wine was blessed by the head person and passed around to each person before and after eating the unleavened bread.

D4 Singing of Psalms.

D5 Lasted 7 days.

B2 Blood

C1 Animal VS Christ

B1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. (Hebrews 10:1-4, NKJV)

B2 The Jewish Law is not a full and faithful model of the real things; it is only a faint outline of the good things to come. The same sacrifices are offered forever, year after year. How can the Law, then, by means of these sacrifices make perfect the people who come to God? If the people worshiping God had really been purified from their sins, they would not feel guilty of sin any more, and all sacrifices would stop. As it is, however, the sacrifices serve year after year to remind people of their sins. For the blood of bulls and goats can never take away sins. (Hebrews 10:1-4, GNB92)

C2 Differences

B3 Last Supper

C1 Views (main source here

D1 Roman Catholic

E1 Eucharist is sacrament

F1 Word means thanksgiving

F2 Sacrament is

G1 "conveys grace to all who receive it worthily."

G2 Forgiveness of sin may be given and obtained.

G3 It is the bloodless sacrifice of the Savior, a real sacrifice.

E2 Consecration (when the priest does the mass)

F1 the bread and the wine become the actual body and blood of Christ.

F2 Transubstantiation is the term used for this.

F3 Christ's presence is in the elements (bread and wine) and is called the Real Presence.

E3 From the Council of Trent (1545-1563):

"...By the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation."

D2 Orthodox

E1 Similar to Roman Catholic

E2 Called mystery rather than sacrament

E3 Does not define how the elements become the actual body and blood of the Savior

D3 Lutheran

E1 Named Consubstantiation

E2 The body and blood of the Savior are present around, in, under, with the bread and wine.

E3 The bread and wine stay bread and wind.

E4 Luther illustrated by an iron rod placed into the fire. Both are united in the red hot iron, yet both are still distinct.

E5 Eucharist does not make present the sacrifice on the Cross.

D4 Reformed and Presbyterian

E1 Christ is not present literally in the elements but is present spiritually.

E2 People receiving the elements receive the actual body and blood of the Savior through the Holy Spirit's power. This works through the sacrament.

E3 This view is called Receptionism.

E4 "The rule which the pious ought always to observe is, whenever they see the symbols instituted by the Lord, to think and feel surely persuaded that the truth of the thing signified is also present. For why does the Lord put the symbol of his body into your hands, but just to assure you that you truly partake of him? If this is true let us feel as much assured that the visible sign is given us in seal of an invisible gift as that his body itself is given to us."--John Calvin

D5 Symbolic

E1 Called the Lord's Supper or Holy Communion.

E2 No physical or spiritual presence of Christ at all. It is just bread and wine (or grape juice).

E3 It is a remembrance and symbolic only.

E4 This view is called Memorialism.

E5 Anglican and Methodist Churches have a wide variety of views.

D6 None

E1 Some like the Salvation Army do not have Eucharist at all.

E2 "The Salvation Army has never said it is wrong to use sacraments, nor does it deny that other Christians receive grace from God through using them. Rather, the Army believes that it is possible to live a holy life and receive the grace of God without the use of physical sacraments and that they should not be regarded as an essential part of becoming a Christian." C2 I Corinthians 11:17-33 Instructions on the Lord's Supper

D1 Failure due to

E1 Divisions--people angry and not speaking to one another. They are not unified to serve the risen Lord.

E2 People are eating the Agape Feast and the Lord's Supper as if at a restaurant, not celebrating and remembering what the Lord Jesus has done for us.

E3 People are not eating together. Some get their food early and chow down before others get any.

D2 Correction

E1 The Lord Jesus gave this info to Paul.

E2 Paul gave it then to the disciples.

E3 The night that the Lord Jesus was betrayed he

F1 Took bread

F2 Gave thanks

F3 Broke the bread

F4 And said, "Take, eat; this is My body which was broken for you.

G1 Thus all would know that it was bread that was a symbol

G2 All would remember what Jesus went through as our Savior.

F5 "Do this in remember of me." It was not eat me as if it was changed into His flesh.

F6 Took the cup after supper.

F7 Said, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood,

F8 "Do this as often as you remember me." Thus indicating that it is symbolic, not real flesh. It is in remembrance.

F9 It was for the purpose of the New Covenant sealed with His blood, just as the first covenant was sealed with blood (animal).

F10 We remember in this way the Lord's death until He returns.

E4 We are to

F1 Do this with reverence. That is in a serious, purposeful manner.

F2 We are to examine ourselves by the rules of the New Testament. If we see that we are not right and in accordance with those rules, then we must repent and get things right with God and man.

F3 If it is not in remember, with a serious attitude, and with a serious examination of ourselves with repentance if needed, then we are guilty of the "body of the Lord and of the blood of the Lord."

F4 We will bring God's judgment on us if we drink and eat irreverently.

G1 Might get physically sick.

G2 Might get physically weak.

G3 Are sure to be spiritually sick and weak.

G4 Some have died.

F5 The importance of judging ourselves is so that we will not be judged by God Himself later.

F6 If God does discipline us, it is so that we do not face that same judgment and fate of the world.

F7 Wait for one another when eating the Love Feast and taking Communion.

F8 If someone is hungry, eat at home.

F9 I sort out and do further instruction late, when I come to visit you.

A4 Questions

B1 In the plain, normal reading of 1 Corinthians 11:17-23, which of the above understandings of remembering the Lord's Supper is most reasonable?

B2 What are we to do before partaking of the Lord's Supper?

B3 What are we to do during the Lord's Supper?

B4 What are we to do after partaking of the Lord's Supper?

Judas Iscariot Prepared by God?

Was Judas Iscariot created, prepared, to be the betrayer?

The thought being that God created Judas to be the betrayer.

Judas became the betrayer because of his own choices.

Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor. (Luke 6:16, EMTV)

Now He was speaking about Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for he was intending to betray Him, though he was one of the twelve. (John 6:71, EMTV)

And after supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, (John 13:2, EMTV)

"Men and brothers; it was necessary for this Scripture to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; (Acts 1:16, EMTV)

Judas began as a follower but ended as a traitor.

Judas began with God but ended up following the devil's suggestion.

Judas began as a follower but ended as a leader, guide, to those who were to arrest the Lord Jesus.

Many start well but end up in disaster.

Let us do things God's way and be humble.

Colossians 3:18-4:1

Colossians Chapter 3:18-4:1

A1 Scripture

B1 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. (Colossians 3:18-4:1, NKJV)

B2 Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, for that is what you should do as Christians. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Children, it is your Christian duty to obey your parents always, for that is what pleases God. Parents, do not irritate your children, or they will become discouraged. Slaves, obey your human masters in all things, not only when they are watching you because you want to gain their approval; but do it with a sincere heart because of your reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people. Remember that the Lord will give you as a reward what he has kept for his people. For Christ is the real Master you serve. And all wrongdoers will be repaid for the wrong things they do, because God judges everyone by the same standard. Masters, be fair and just in the way you treat your slaves. Remember that you too have a Master in heaven. (Colossians 3:18-4:1, GNB92)

A3 Notes

B1 These are part of the practical laws in the New Testament that we are required to do.

B2 Wives

C1 These are females (XX, not XY).

C2 The word is plural not because we are allowed to have more than one wife, but it is because Paul is writing to the whole church at Colossae.

B3 Submit (Colossians 3:18)

C1 Not as a slave with no rights.

C2 But a yielding to the higher authority.

C3 Someone has to have the last word.

C4 The word means "under another".

D1 Instead of pushing for superiority, dominance, bullying,

D2 Has the idea of willing to acknowledge the better opinion of another.

D3 The idea of amenable, docile, open (to another's opinion).

"ready or willing to answer, act, agree, or yield; open to influence, persuasion, or advice; agreeable; submissive; tractable:

an amenable servant."--amenable. (n.d.). Dictionary.com Unabridged. Retrieved March 17, 2015, from Dictionary.com website: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/amenable

C5 This does NOT mean a woman is second rate. Consider

D1 Eve is called the "Mother of all living."

D2 Miriam is called a prophetess.

D3 Deborah is a judge in Israel.

D4 Mary, the mother of Jesus.

D5 The first Human witnesses of the resurrected Jesus were women.

D6 The deacon Phillip had daughters who were recognized as prophetesses.

C6 God has a very high opinion of women.

C7 It is to their own husbands, not just to any male.

C8 "As fitting to the Lord" has the idea of this is what we should do as Christians.

B4 Husbands

C1 The word husband in English has the idea of

D1 One of the house

D2 That lives in there, build, and cultivates

D3 So one who has the responsibility of overseeing the household for safety and stability.

C2 Are one with their wives (Matthew 19:5)

C3 God wants wives treated well. "Yet you say, "For what reason?" Because the LORD has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, With whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion And your wife by covenant. But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. "For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence," Says the LORD of hosts. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously." (Malachi 2:14-16, NKJV)

D1 The word treacherously means to be unfaithful.

D2 It also has the idea of breaking treaties, agreements, promises, etc.

D3 It even includes ideas as betrayal.

D4 God punishes such. "But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it." (Proverbs 2:22, NKJV)

C4 To love our wives.

D1 Love here is agape.

D2 It is the love of choice and faithfulness.

D3 It is the love of 1 Corinthians 13

D4 It is not necessarily of words but definitely is of actions.

C5 Without bitterness (per definition at Dictionary.com)

D1 Distressful

D2 Causing pain

D3 Hostile

D4 Resentful or cynical

C6 Words and actions do hurt.

C7 Bitterness is not to be a Christian activity or attitude. "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and blasphemy be removed from you, with all malice." (Ephesians 4:31, EMTV)

C8 Some things that make a marriage better.

D1 Listen to your wife. When she is talking, look at her.

D2 Respect her opinion.

D3 Do something nice for her like wash the dishes or vacuum the carpet.

C9 To praise your wife (genuine praise please) especially in public. "Her children show their appreciation, and her husband praises her." (Proverbs 31:28, GNB92)

B5 Children

C1 This would be children at home.

C2 Obey in all things.

D1 Positive aspect--It may save your life.

D2 Negative aspect--do not obey if it is criminal (that is, against God's law) or hurts someone.

D3 Learning to obey helps out in life situations as when the children get a job.

B6 Fathers

C1 Very important in the life of a child.

C2 Article

C3 Bible verses

D1 We are to pity, have compassion on, our children. "As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him." (Psalms 103:13, ESV2011)

D2 Teach children wisdom and right from wrong. "My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother." (Proverbs 1:8, NKJV)

D3 The teaching of restraint and self-control are vital. "Discipline your son, for there is hope; don't be a willing party to his death." (Proverbs 19:18, WEB)

D4 Live what we teach. "Children are fortunate if they have a father who is honest and does what is right." (Proverbs 20:7, GNB92)

B7 Parents

C1 Are not to make their children angry by

D1 Setting unrealistic goals. Demanding too much from them as in expecting a 5 year old to read at the 12th grade level or to have all "A's" in school.

D2 Abuse them in any way.

D3 Let them run wild without learning any self-control.

D4 Lying to them.

D5 Lying about them.

D6 Treat them like they are worthless.

D7 Be inconsistent. Have them obey one rule for one child and the other doesn't have to, or have all obey a rule for a while and then not obey for a while then return to obeying the rule.

D8 Criticize your spouse in front of the children.

D9 Never show love or kindness to your spouse, your children, or the pets.

D10 Never allow them to express their opinion.

D11 When your child asks you why they have to do something tell them, "Because I said so."

D12 Often when a child is hurt frequently (as in abuse or a lack of love), they become bitter. When bitterness goes on and on, they become angry. If the irritant (as abuse or lack of love) continue, it might be hate. If hate remains, it may lead to murder. Consider Absalom, King David's son.

D13 Always tell them what not to do, but never tell them the right way to do something.

D14 Criticize them frequently.

D15 Never listen to them.

D16 Break your promises to them.

D17 Falsely accuse them of something.

D18 Play favorites.

D19 Never praise a child for anything good they do. Always point out there faults and weaknesses.

D20 Never take an interest in what they are doing. For example, they may say to you, "Daddy, look at this pretty picture I drew for you." If your child is doing something special in school, never ask how they are doing, never show up when they do this special thing, never listen to them when they tell you what award or honor they have achieved.

D21 Tell them you hate them.

D22 Tell them they are in your way.

D23 Tell them you wish they were never born.

D24 Never be sympathetic or empathetic.

D25 Have your child be your therapist as in telling them all your worries, fears, sins, etc.

D26 Overprotect your child.

D27 Never let your child experience failure. Always cover up for their mistakes and blame someone else.

D28 Never let your child make a decision. Make all their decisions for them.

D29 Don't do anything with your child. Maybe you like fishing, so don't take them with you. Maybe they like fishing, so don't take them fishing.

D30 Yell at them a lot.

D31 Be arrogant.

D32 Tease them about their looks.

C2 Lest they become discouraged

D1 They want to give up for it seems impossible to please their parents.

D2 Often they, then, reject what the parents believe.

B8 Bondservants

C1 Servant

D1 Different words

E1 Strong's number G3610 refers to household servants. οἰκέτης

F1 These are those who work in the house.

F2 "Now when the angel who had been speaking to Cornelius had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually." (Acts 10:7, EMTV) (Bold is the word for household servant--οἰκέτης (oiketēs).

E2 Strong's number G1401 refers to servants. δοῦλος

F1 The difference between servants and slaves.

G1 The word slave in English engenders the torture and treatment of the Old South and her plantations.

G2 The word servant in English gives the idea of being an employee serving another person.

G3 The word servant in Greek has the idea of dependence on a Lord.

G4 While some Greek servants were mistreated, it would be no different than modern workers who are mistreated by their employers.

G5 The "Greeks have a strong sense of freedom. Personal dignity consists of freedom. There is thus a violent aversion to bondage. Service may be rendered to the state, but by free choice. Slavery is scorned and rejected. This explains the fierceness with which the Greeks fought for political independence. The only slavery Plato will allow is to the laws. The laws, however, represent the goal of humanity, so that slavery to law is in no way derogatory. Aristotle shows a similar scorn for slavery; for him slaves have no part in the state or true service to it. The Stoics have a broader view of service. Zeus himself summons us to it, so that, while free in relation to all people, we are unconditionally bound to all. Yet the Stoic would never call himself the doúlos theoú; he moves through the world as basileús and despótēs, the very opposite of the doúlos. This is the characteristic of the wise. Those who are not wise are slaves, no matter what the form of their bondage (cf. Epictetus, Plutarch, and Philo)." Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, Abridged in One Volume, Kittel, Gerhard; Friedrich, Gerhard, 1985, Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. Entry on the would doulos (G1401).

D2 If would seem unlikely that the Apostles who designate themselves as servants would consider themselves slaves as understood by modern English readers. "Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 1:1, WEB)

C2 Instructions for servants, employees, and other types of workers.

D1 Obey your masters (human)

D2 In all things

D3 Not only while they watch you

D4 In sincerity of heart

D5 Fearing God

D6 Do everything

E1 Do the best of your ability and

E2 With a good attitude

D7 The promise

E1 The Lord will give

E2 The reward of service

D8 Jesus Christ is the ultimate boss whom we really serve

D9 The one who disobeys will also be rewarded.

D10 God shows no partiality.

B9 Masters

C1 Give what is fair. This would be a proper wage, not just a wage required by law.

C2 Give what is just. This would be a honest pay check, not one based on fudged hours.

C3 Remember you have your Master in heaven. The Master in heaven, Jesus, will deal with you either now or later.

How to make your children angry

Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. (Colossians 3:21, EMTV)

Here are 32 ways to make your child(ren) angry.

SUBMIT YOURSELVES TO GOD—from the book Handfuls on Purpose, Smith, James and Lee, Robert, Public domain

James 4:6-7

Man, away from God, is represented as an enemy and a rebel.

I. What is not Submission. A man has not submitted to God as long as he is-

1. In a State of Indifference. Like Gallio, caring for none of these things (Acts 18:17).

2. Living only for Self. Desiring his own praise and honor.

3. Seeking to Please Men. Satisfied with an outward appearance.

4. Loving the World. If the world is in the heart, it is still an enemy to God.

II. To Whom we should submit. To God.

1. Because He hath made us. Our Creator.

2. Because He hath sent His Son to save us (John 3:16).

3. Because He hath given His Spirit to quicken and comfort us.

4. Because He hath given His Word to guide and assure us.

III. What is to be submitted? "Yourselves." This implies-

(1) Your will and affections. (2) Your time and talents. (3) Your plans and purposes. (4) Your pleasures and possessions. (5) Your cares and anxieties.

IV. Why you ought to Submit. "Submit therefore" (Matthew 25:7)-

1. Because God resists the proud-sets Himself against those who rebel against Him. It is vain to hope to succeed in the face of a resisting God.

2. Because God giveth grace to the humble. Those who submit will receive grace sufficient to pardon, to reconcile, to keep, to satisfy, and to bring into the presence of His glory (Psalms 138:6).

Commentary: Colossians 3:12-17

Colossians 3:12-17 Relationship between believers

A1 Scripture

B1 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

(Colossians 3:12-17 NKJV)

B2 You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you. And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things together in perfect unity. The peace that Christ gives is to guide you in the decisions you make; for it is to this peace that God has called you together in the one body. And be thankful. Christ's message in all its richness must live in your hearts. Teach and instruct one another with all wisdom. Sing psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing to God with thanksgiving in your hearts. Everything you do or say, then, should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, as you give thanks through him to God the Father.

(Colossians 3:12-17 GNB)

A3 Notes

B1 Saint

C1 Defined

D1 Child of God.

D2 All born again Christians are saints.

C2 Described

D1 Holy

E1 Has to do with "dedicated to the gods."

E2 One which is dedicated to the God, Yahweh, would be of a certain character.

E3 Morally and spiritually blameless.

E4 Separated for God's service.

E5 Such a person (holy because of the work of God in their heart) is holy because of God's mercy and love. If there was no prevenient grace, there would be no saved and holy people.

D2 Beloved

E1 Because these obey the call, repented, and trusted into Jesus Christ.

E2 Christians are more loved by God because of this.

E3 John Wesley in his comment on Colossians 3:12 writes, "All who are thus renewed are elected of God, holy, and therefore the more beloved of him. Holiness is the consequence of their election, and God's superior love, of their holiness."

B2 Put on

C1 This is in contrast to the things that we are to put off (Colossians 3:8).

C2 The list presented here would be good for any society.

C3 The list presented here is rare in society as the human heart is evil.

C4 The list presented here is important because it reflects the character of God and His way of life.

C5 The list presented here is important for us today, because it is the way of life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

C6 The list

D1 Tender mercies

E1 Mercy is not receiving what we deserve.

E2 It is for those things which we possible can overlook. Some things cannot be overlooked as those things which might endanger our or others' lives and well-being as verbal abuse, physical abuse, elder abuse, neglect, financial abuse, etc.

E3 It is for those things when someone genuinely asks for forgiveness.

E4 It is what God does to us when we ask forgiveness.

D2 Kindness

E1 Kindness is a form of gentleness.

E2 It is being nice to someone.

E3 It is the opposite of rough treatment, words, thoughts, etc.

D3 Humility

E1 Humility is to think of ourselves honestly.

E2 It is to NOT think of ourselves as the greatest, best, most intelligent, etc.

E3 It is NOT to think of ourselves as pretending we are nothing.

E4 It is listening to another's opinion or thoughts, then weighing that information before making a decision.

D4 Meekness

E1 Meekness is not to push our rights (supposed and actual).

E2 It is NOT to put up with evil, so called tolerance, bullying, or manipulation.

E3 It is an attitude of not being pushy in relationships of any type.

D5 Longsuffering

E1 It is putting up with situations as a someone sickness and still treating them gently and kindly.

E2 It is not reacting when someone is venting.

E3 It is being patient.

E4 It is NOT being easily provoked.

E5 It is to get angry slowly rather than instantly being in rage.

E6 It is a form of love in action.

E7 It is NOT putting up with words and actions that are damaging emotionally, financially, physically, etc.

E8 It is accepting God's will if He allows suffering and persecution (as the Lord Jesus demonstrated in His trials).

D6 Forbearing (Colossians 3:13)

E1 Forbearing is a ceasing or pausing of action or reaction to people for a time.

E2 It is to back off something for a while.

D7 Forgive

E1 God forgave us

E2 We should forgive others

E3 Forgiveness is for humans to turn over all revenge, penalty, judgment to God to deal with. He may punish or convict. If one is convicted of their evil, then they can repent and ask God for forgiveness.

E4 Jesus paid the penalty for sin by suffering for our sins. When He forgives, it is pardon, because the penalty has been paid.

D8 Love (Colossians 3:14)

E1 Love is a choice, attitude, with or without emotion, passion, etc.

E2 Love is many things in action as seen in 1 Corinthians 13.

B3 Peace of God (Colossians 3:15)

C1 Peace is calmness, rest, freedom from physical, emotional, or spiritual discomfort.

C2 There are types of peace as peace in the world, peace with others, etc.

C3 There are types of false peace as suppressing them emotionally or in drugs and alcohol, etc.

C4 Peace of God is the peace that God gives. "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27, EMTV)

B4 In your hearts (Colossians 3:15)

C1 Our deepest place in our inner life.

C2 The source of motivation, attitude, desires, even evil.

C3 When God gives peace it is into our hearts.

C4 Therefore whatever we face in life can be handled because that peace, God's peace, is in our hearts, and He will be there also.

C5 To rule means to be the deciding factor, the umpire, for our competing feelings, emotions, etc.

B5 One body (Colossians 3:15) All Christians are one body, one group, one family, and comrades in life.

B6 Thankful (Colossians 3:15).

C1 Thankfulness is telling or showing someone appreciation for what they have done or said.

C2 We are to be thankful to God for many things especially His mercy and in meeting our daily needs.

C3 We are to be thankful to the brethren, to the church, to our neighbors, and to all we meet as much as is possible.

B7 Word of Christ (Colossians 3:16)

C1 Has the idea of the teachings that the Lord Jesus gave us.

C2 This would be the opposite of our dwelling of the teachings of the age.

B8 Richly--much, a lot of

B9 Wisdom, teaching, and admonishing

C1 The teachings of the Lord Jesus are to be abundant in our life.

C2 In wisdom--thinking God's way, so taking the teachings in their plain, normal sense and basing our decisions on them.

C3 In teaching--what we teach others.

C4 In admonishing--that is in encouraging others in their Christian walk.

D1 Three ways of doing the admonishing is through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. "Teaching Through Music"

E1 Psalms--music set to a Psalm and sung.

E2 Hymns--teaching a doctrine.

It Should Have Been Me (with Ron Hurst)

© 1978 Dan Simmons Author: words & music: Dan Simmons

It was my sin that brought Him there and nailed Him to that tree...It was my pain that He would bear the stripes were meant for me... It was my guilt, my shameful blindness that brought Him to that place...Yet it was love, tender loving kindness that brought the fullness of God's grace

It was judgment and punishment that brought Him agony...I was condemned to die, bound up in chains 'til Jesus set me free...Crucified in shame, hanging there on a cross between two thieves...He showed me just how much He cared, the day that Jesus died for me

All the way up to Calvary, He walked there in my place...Every step up that mountain steep was a step of love and grace... As my Savior He died on that cruel and rugged tree... O, yes but it should have been me

From His heaven from His holy throne, He came to bear my hell...Of such love and grace and mercy shown no tongue could ever tell... And someday I'll stand before Him and I'll see Him face to face... I will worship and adore Him for the day He took my place

And all the way up to Calvary, He walked there in my place...Every step up that mountain steep was a step of love and grace... As my Savior He died on that cruel and rugged tree... O, yes but it should have been me

O, yes but it should have... it should have been me....O, yes but it should have been me

E4 Spiritual Songs--songs teaching encouragement, etc.

Hold Me Jesus--Ronnie Lee Hurst

Well, I've been trav'lin' down a long road

Through a dry and weary land

HOLD ME JESUS

And I've been stumblin' on the way Lord

Over things I just don't understand

I've been wastin' precious moments

On this burnt out, selfish man

Help me Jesus, hold me Jesus in Your hand

And I've been walkin' through some hard times

That have cut me to the soul

And I've been searchin' for some answers

Though the questions, I don't know

I've been wondering through this desert

And all I feel is scorching sand

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus in Your hand

Hold me Jesus...hold me Jesus

Lift me up Lord...help me stand

Lord I need us to walk together through this land

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus in Your hand

Hold me Jesus...hold me Jesus

Lift me up Lord...help me stand

Lord I need us to walk together through this land

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus in Your hand

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus in Your hand

Help me Jesus...hold me Jesus ...

In Your hand

D2 Music can be used to teach doctrine and encouragement.

D3 Songs that lead us into a nearly trancelike experience are NOT doing this.

B10 Word and action (Colossians 3:17)

C1 Everything we do should be glorifying to God.

C2 Our words, thoughts, desires, and actions should show the world that we are Christians.

C3 "Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it shines on everything in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:15-16, EMTV)

C4 What we do and how we do it is noticed by people.

D1 Negatively as hypocrites.

E1 ""Moreover, when you fast, do not become gloomy, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly I say to you, that they receive their reward in full." (Matthew 6:16, EMTV)

E2 "But all their works they do in order to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and they enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the first couch at banquets, and the best seats in the synagogues," (Matthew 23:5-6, EMTV)

D2 Positively as being genuine

E1 "Now in Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which, being translated, means Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable giving which she was doing." (Acts 9:36, EMTV)

E2 "Then Jesus answered and said: "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and encountered bandits, who after having stripped him of his clothing and having wounded him, departed, leaving him half dead. Now by coincidence a certain priest was coming down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite, arriving at the place, came and saw, and passed by on the opposite side. But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled, came by him; and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion. And coming to him, he bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and putting him on his own animal, he brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, 'Take care of him; and whatever you spend in addition, when I come back, I will repay you.' So which of these three does it seem to you proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the bandits?" And he said, "the one who showed mercy to him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." (Luke 10:30-37, EMTV)
