Think: Live conscious of the fact that Christ’s death made salvation and a relationship with God possible.
Do: Trust in Christ’s sacrifice and live for Him in appreciation for what He has done for me.

Scriptures: Matthew 27:11-54

B3 Jesus
  • Suffered for our sins. "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit," (1 Peter 3:18 NKJV)
  • He carried our sins. "who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed." (1 Peter 2:24 NKJV)
  • He was tortured in many ways. "Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." (Isaiah 53:4-6 NKJV)
  • He was cursed by God. "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree")," (Galatians 3:13 NKJV)
  • The physical suffering was great but His spiritual suffering was even greater. "And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"" (Matthew 27:46 NKJV)
B4 Some points
  • Brian Williams in the D6 Fusion Teaching Guide for March to May 2017 points out three crimes that Jesus was accused of
    • Misleading the nation
    • Forbidding the payment of taxes
    • Claiming to be a king
  • Romans allowed no rival king/kingdoms. Jesus answers with incredible wisdom. "Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews? "Jesus answered him, "Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me? "Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done? "Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here. "Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."" (John 18:33-37 NKJV). He is a king but of a different kingdom.
  • Jesus was innocent.
    • King Herod said so ""no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him." (Luke 23:15 NKJV)
    • Pilate said so "So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no fault in this Man."" (Luke 23:4 NKJV)
    • Pilate’s wife said so "While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him."" (Matthew 27:19 NKJV)
B5 Matthew 27:11-14
  • Why did Pilate ask the question “Are you the King of the Jews?”
  • Why didn't Jesus answer the accusations of the religious crowd of Jews?
B6 Matthew 27:15-26
  • Do you think Pilate was surprised that the Jews choose Barabbas?
  • In verse 23, Pilate asks, “Why, what evil has he done?” Why didn’t the religious crowd answer Pilate?
  • What are the implications of "And all the people answered and said, "His blood be on us and on our children." (Matthew 27:25 NKJV)
  • Is there a problem with the religious leaders say, "saying, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man's blood on us!"" (Acts 5:28 NKJV)
B7 Matthew 27:27-31
  • Why were the soldiers making fun of Jesus?
  • Consider
    • The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows. (Psalms 129:3 [KJV]
    • I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. (Isaiah 50:6 [KJV])
    • But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5 [KJV]
  • Are people today still working at killing the Lord Jesus? How?
B8 Matthew 27:32-44
  • The things that the Lord Jesus experienced--I deserved, but He willingly, lovingly, died for all humanity.
  • Cyrene
    • Many Jews lived here
    • About 800 miles from Jerusalem
    • Simon was there probably celebrating the Passover
  • Cyrene.png
  • The drink
    • On Bible.org (https://bible.org/seriespage/38-death-deaths#P3868_1183722 ) it is mentioned in footnote 190: “It is good to know that it was customary for a drug to be offered to the crucified so that some of the pain was mitigated. We read of the custom in Sanh. 43a, ‘When one is led out to execution, he is given a goblet of wine containing a grain of frankincense, in order to benumb his senses, for it is written, Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish and wine unto bitter in soul. And it has also been taught: The noble women in Jerusalem used to donate and bring it.’” (Ioncino edn., pp. 279f.) Ibid., p. 814, fn. 72.
    • The “wine” is a mixture of grape vinegar and water.
    • The “gall” is probably understood as something bitter, so too the “myrrh” of Mark 15:23
    • It is thought it was something to dull pain and/or anxiety.
    • Jesus refused to drink it. Why?
  • The blasphemy
    • The onlookers, the chief priests, scribes, elders, and the robbers all blasphemed Jesus.
    • What words are the blasphemous words?
    • Is it blasphemy to cuss, diss, Jesus?
    • How are these words blasphemy?
B9 Matthew 27:45-56
  • Did Jesus really die? How do we know?
  • The sixth hour is our 1200 (noon) and the ninth hour is our 1500 (3PM).
  • Did God really forsake Jesus?
  • How can God forsake God?
  • Did satan kill Jesus?
  • Did Jesus die a natural death, that is, from natural processes?
  • See
    • “...even as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep, which are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will hear my voice. They will become one flock with one shepherd. Therefore the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again. No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down by myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. I received this commandment from my Father.” (John 10:15-18 [WEB])
    • who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father— (Galatians 1:4 [WEB])
    • even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28 [WEB]
  • Why is the Temple Veil torn in two?
    • The purpose of the Temple Veil
      • The Holy Place was a place where the priests ministered daily, but the Most Holy Place, Holy of Holies, was entered only once a year by the High Priest.
      • The Most Holy Place was the room where God’s Presence was located.
      • The doors to the Most Holy Place were always open, but the veil separated the two rooms.
      • Any who entered there would die. No one could enter there to pray. This is because people are evil with unclean hearts.
      • The rending of the Veil opened the way for believers to come and pray boldly in His presence.
      • See
        • Exodus 26:31-37
        • Leviticus 16:11-14
      • Thus we are taught
        • Full atonement is complete (Hebrews 10:19-20).
        • Jesus had completed the Passover atoning sacrifice in the true tabernacle in heaven (Hebrews 9:12 and Hebrews 9:24).
        • Jesus is the Messiah, the one and only mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5 and Hebrews 7:23-28)
        • Believers can directly come and pray without a human priest (Romans 5:2, Ephesians 2:18, and Ephesians 3:12).
  • Was the raising of some Old Testament saints for real or a non-inspired embellishment in the Scriptures?
    • It is this real history? If not, then we don’t know what miraculous events are real or embellishments.
    • God cannot lie.
  • The centurion’s words literally read “Truly, God’s Son was this.”
  • Why do we know that the Lord Jesus was truly dead?
  • What benefit do believers have because of Jesus’s death?

Notes and questions
B1 Outline
  • Before the donkey Matthew 21:1-6
  • With the donkey Matthew 21:7-11
B2 Timeline–show page. Timeline
B3 Mount of Olives
B4 Donkey
  • One or two
    • He said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you. You will find a donkey tied there and a colt with it. Untie them, and bring them to me. (Matthew 21:2 [GodsWord]
    • He said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a young donkey tied there. No one has ever sat on it. Untie it, and bring it. (Mark 11:2 [GodsWord]
    • He said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter, you will find a young donkey tied there. No one has ever sat on it. Untie it, and bring it. (Luke 19:30 [GodsWord]
    • The importance was on the colt, so that was mentioned in both Mark and Luke. The fuller view in Matthew, lending evidence to various eye-witness testimony, has both donkey and colt.
    • Matthew is showing the fulfillment of prophecy.  This happened so that what the prophet had said came true: "Tell the people of Zion, 'Your king is coming to you. He's gentle, riding on a donkey, on a colt, a young pack animal.'" (Matthew 21:4-5 [GodsWord] The quote is from Zechariah: Rejoice with all your heart, people of Zion! Shout in triumph, people of Jerusalem! Look! Your King is coming to you: He is righteous and victorious. He is humble and rides on a donkey, on a colt, a young pack animal. (Zechariah 9:9 [GodsWord])
  • Did Jesus ask the disciples to steal the colt?
    • Consider:  He said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you. You will find a donkey tied there and a colt with it. Untie them, and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them. That person will send them at once." (Matthew 21:2-3 [GodsWord])
    • They had the permission of the owner.  The men Jesus sent found it as he had told them. While they were untying the young donkey, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the donkey?" (Luke 19:32-33 [GodsWord]
    • The disciples found the young donkey in the street. It was tied to the door of a house. As they were untying it, some men standing there asked them, "Why are you untying that donkey?" The disciples answered them as Jesus had told them. So the men let them go. (Mark 11:4-6 [GodsWord])
B5 Why a public entry into Jerusalem?
  • The death of Jesus was for all people. A Savior has suffered for our sins. He has paid the penalty for all, if they but put their trust in Him. It needed to be done publicly.
  • "God has been helping me to this day so that I can stand and testify to important and unimportant people. I tell them only what the prophets and Moses said would happen. They said that the Messiah would suffer and be the first to come back to life and would spread light to Jewish and non-Jewish people." As Paul was defending himself in this way, Festus shouted, "Paul, you're crazy! Too much education is driving you crazy!" Paul replied, "I'm not crazy, Your Excellency Festus. What I'm saying is true and sane. I can easily speak to a king who knows about these things. I'm sure that none of these things has escaped his attention. None of this was done secretly. (Acts 26:22-26 [GodsWord]).
B6 Questions
  • How did Jesus know about the two donkeys and the response from those with the donkeys?
  • Is anything hidden from God?
  • Why was it that the same nation that is here praising later calls for his death?
  • Why is it that religious leaders reject Bible truth?
  • What did the crowd not understand when they identified him as a prophet from Galilee?
B7 What is humility?
  • The word generally has the idea of “being low.” It is the difference between exalting us in every area or exalting another.
  • Someone who is humble will
    • Acknowledge limitations
    • Acknowledge faults
    • Be grateful
    • Accept mistakes
    • Admit mistakes

    • Listen to other opinions respectfully
    • Acknowledge another’s help/assist, etc.
    • Be conscientious
    • Not afraid to ask for help
    • Quick to forgive
    • Patient and not frustrated with other’s weaknesses

  • How does Jesus fit the above characteristics?
B8 Bethphage
B9 Fulfilled prophecy
  • Rejoice with all your heart, people of Zion! Shout in triumph, people of Jerusalem! Look! Your King is coming to you: He is righteous and victorious. He is humble and rides on a donkey, on a colt, a young pack animal. He will make sure there are no chariots in Ephraim or war horses in Jerusalem. There will be no battle bows. He will announce peace to the nations. He will rule from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth. (Zechariah 9:9-10 [GodsWord])
  • The LORD has announced to the ends of the earth: "Tell my people Zion, 'Your Savior is coming. His reward is with him, and the people he has won arrive ahead of him.'" (Isaiah 62:11 [GodsWord]
  • Zion according to Jewish scribes for generations and the studies of Dr. Jimmy Deyoung believe that Zion, Temple Mount, was the location of the Garden of Eden. See: http://devotional.prophecytoday.com/2014/09/isaiah-5111.html
  • What/who is “Son of David?”
    • This is a term for Messiah.
    • When the time comes for you to lie down in death with your ancestors, I will send one of your descendants, one who will come from you. I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he will be my Son. If he sins, I will punish him with a rod and with blows inflicted by people. But I will never stop showing him my love as I did to Saul, whom I took out of your way. Your royal house will remain in my presence forever. Your throne will be established forever.'" (II Samuel 7:12-16 [GodsWord]
    • Blood descendent of King David See Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38.  While the Pharisees were still gathered, Jesus asked them, "What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?" They answered him, "David's." He said to them, "Then how can David, guided by the Spirit, call him Lord? David says, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Take the highest position in heaven until I put your enemies under your control."' If David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?" No one could answer him, and from that time on no one dared to ask him another question. (Matthew 22:41-46 [GodsWord])
    • Resources:
    • Compare:  King David said, "Summon the priest Zadok, the prophet Nathan, and Benaiah, son of Jehoiada." So they came to the king, and he said, "Take my officials with you. Put my son Solomon on my mule, and take him to Gihon. (I Kings 1:32-33 [GodsWord]
B10 A friend
  • God is real. He is not an imaginary friend.
  • Some characteristics
    • Common interests
    • Common goals
    • Common opinions (not exactly the same)
    • Common likes as in music, food
    • They just have much in common and enjoy being with each other
  • Quotes:
    • I am a friend to everyone who fears you and to everyone who follows your guiding principles. (Psalms 119:63 [GodsWord]
    • who leaves her husband, the closest friend of her youth, and forgets her marriage vows to her God. (Proverbs 2:17 [GodsWord] I put this verse here to point out that our closest friend must be, ought to be, our spouse.
    • But God commends His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the reconciliation. (Romans 5:8-11 [MKJV])
    • You are my friends if you obey my commandments. I don't call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn't know what his master is doing. But I've called you friends because I've made known to you everything that I've heard from my Father. (John 15:14-15 [GodsWord]
    • And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." And he was called a friend of God. (James 2:23 [EMTV]
    • The word friends is usually φίλος (philos, fee-los) and has the idea of a common love based on experience.
    • What are the conditions for God to be our friend?
B11 Few more questions
  • The large crowds praised His arrival. Why did this crowd not support and praise the Lord Jesus in the next few days?
  • Why was one group praising Jesus, while the other group was rejecting?  By this time he was coming near the place where the road went down the Mount of Olives. Then the whole crowd of disciples began to praise God for all the miracles they had seen. They shouted joyfully, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven." Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell your disciples to be quiet." Jesus replied, "I can guarantee that if they are quiet, the stones will cry out." (Luke 19:37-40 [GodsWord]

About Forgiveness. Forgiving that evil person

Often when I encourage others (and myself), I ask them if they have forgiven that person. The most frequent reply is, "I can (or will not) forgive what they have done to me." I then explain that forgiveness doesn't mean that person gets away with their evil deed. It does mean that it is turned over to God to deal with.

The Lord Jesus showed this: (Luke 23:34 [MKJV]) And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. And parting His clothing, they cast lots.

Likewise Stephen as he was dying because he was a Christian said: (Acts 7:60 [MKJV]) And kneeling down, he cried with a loud voice, Lord, do not lay this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

In these passages there is no hint that eternal forgiveness from God is meant. It is only to turn over that evil deed to God for Him to deal with that evil person.

A wonderful article I found explaining various myths of forgiveness includes this:

What Forgiveness Isn't

6 myths that may be keeping you from letting go.

by Denise George

I listened quietly as my friend Jamie told me the frank details of the sexual abuse she'd suffered as a child.
"I hate my father!" she blurted out. "He abused me for more than a decade!" Jamie cried.
"But my pastor said if I want to heal from my childhood pain, I have to forgive."
"What did you tell your pastor?" I asked.
"I told him I could never forgive my father, that I didn't want to forgive him, that no one—not even God—would expect me to forgive him!" Jamie told me all the reasons that kept her from forgiving her abusive father. I'd heard many of them before. In fact, I'd used some of them two years earlier, when a friend I'd trusted to keep a confidence told several women in my Sunday school class about a painful circumstance I was going through. I felt betrayed by my friend—as I should have. But forgive her? That was the last thing I wanted to do! I dropped out of the Sunday school class and avoided her at church. But a year later, when I reread what the apostle Paul said about forgiveness, his familiar words touched my heart in a special way: "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32, my emphasis).
As I meditated on that verse, I knew I'd been...
