E2 All know truth at some point, but most suppress it.

E3 The Greek word for suppress is κατέχω katéchō. It means

F1 Restrain, hold down, hinder, keep secure, etc.

F2 Truth is something in the open, not secret, not hidden.

F4 Robertson’s Word Pictures on this word in our passage writes: ...but wicked men, so to speak, put it in a box and sit on the lid and “hold it down in unrighteousness.” Their evil deeds conceal the open truth of God from men.

D3 Rejecting and suppressing truth has a consequence

E3 Romans 1:21-23 NLT Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn't worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. 23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

E4 If truth is rejected, deception is the result. In the first days of the Tribulation, it is prophesied that the Lawless One (anti-Christ) will easily deceive people because they have rejected truth. Rejection of truth finally leads to being easily deceived. People become easily deceived, because they want to hear something that agrees with their desires. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 WEL This [Lawless] one is coming according to the energy of Satan with all lying miracles, signs, and wonders. 10 [He comes] with all unrighteous power to deceive those who perish, because they didn’t receive the love of the truth that they might be saved. 11 For this reason God will send them strong delusion, so that they would believe a lie, 12 And that they might all be judged, who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

D4 They keep rejecting and suppressing truth, so it gets worse, for God punishes sin with allowing their desire for sin. Sinful desires are their first love.

D5 All of God’s categories of law are broken (10 Commandments). Sin comes from our hearts. Mark 7:21-23 NLT For from within, out of a person's heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. 23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.

D6 Finally, many end here: Romans 1:28-32 NLT Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. 29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. 31 They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. 32 They know God's justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.

C2 Chapter 2 deals with

D2 The Jews felt they were special and in the Kingdom of God, but they are sinners, too. They need a savior. They need to believe and trust in Jesus. Romans 2:28-29 NLT For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. 29 No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by God's Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people.

C3 Chapter 3

D1 God is faithful.

E1 The Jews knew God’s law because they had God’s message, thus their sins are worse than the ignorant heathen.

E2 Obeying the law outwardly is not enough to please God.

E3 The Jews need to believe in their Messiah, just as all people must.

D2 All people are sinners. All people are hopelessly addicted to sin. 2 Peter 2:19 NLT They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you.

D3 No one seeks for God. No one is able to seek for God. If God did not initiate salvation, no one would ever be forgiven. Romans 3:21-22 NLT But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

Romans 3:23-26, 28 NLT For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard. 24 Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, 26 for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he declares sinners to be right in his sight when they believe in Jesus. ... 28 So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.

D1 The beginning of proof that Christianity is the only salvation and truth begins with Jesus. He existed, what He did and said, His miracles, His prophesies, and His work as High Priest. This is most reasonable. A source for more information is here.

D2 Salvation is the most important thing. We live, and we will die. After death, there is judgment. After judgment, there is sentencing. The sentencing is for eternity, never ending, either torment or bliss in heaven. The believers will be blessed with fellowship with God, the holy, elect angels, and other believers. The believers will be blessed to serve God forever. He is King of the Universe.

John 3:15-21 WEL So that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so that anyone believing in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

17 “For God did not send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

18 “The one who believes in him is not judged, but the one who does not believe is judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 “This is [the reason for] the judgment, because light is come into the world and people loved darkness rather than light, because their actions were evil.

20 “Everyone who does evil hates the light and doesn’t come to the light, so that his actions may be exposed and reproved [discovered and reproved is one word in Greek].

21 “But the one who does the truth comes to the light, so that his actions may be plainly seen that they are done in God.”

A Few Thoughts About Women in 1 Timothy 2

The Scripture:

1 Timothy 2:8-15 WEL Therefore, I want men to pray wherever they are, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubt. 9 Likewise, that women dress themselves in modest clothes, inclined to avoid notice, and be in self-control, not with embroidered hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly clothes, 10 But with what is proper for women professing godliness along with good works. 11 Let a women learn quietly in humble gentleness. 12 Now, I do not allow a woman to teach or domineer a man but to be quiet, 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 Adam was not deceived, but the woman, being deceived, was in transgression. 15 Nevertheless, she will be saved through the childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness with self-control.

Notes:

B1 Paul left Timothy with the congregation in Ephesus due to some problems they were experiencing. 1 Timothy 1:3-4 WEL As I encouraged you to remain in Ephesus, when I was going to Macedonia, so that you would tell certain [individuals] not to teach any other doctrine, 4 Or pay attention to fables and endless genealogies, which leads to controversy rather than godly growth in faith.

C1 Paul was in Ephesus 2 times, once for a few months and later for about 2 years about 54 AD. (Acts 19:8,10; 20:31)

C2 Paul wrote 1 Timothy about 63 AD.

C3 The people of Ephesus

D1 Were dedicated to Diana (Artemis, etc.)

D2 A good number of the citizens believed the Gospel.

D3 Were by tradition a city founded by the Amazons (warrior women, domineering, brutal, aggressive, etc.)

D4 It is believed that women in Ephesian society, due to the influence of Artemis, had powerful positions, high rank as priestesses, and influence regardless of who their husbands were. (Source)

D5 The sisters in the congregation evidently were domineering, controlling, and forceful in their teaching, speaking, actions, etc. They were rebuked for this.

C3 The Lord Jesus gave a message to the Ephesian congregation in Revelation 2:1-7. There was no rebuke like Paul instructed Timothy to give, so the work of Timothy, with God’s grace, helped the Ephesian church for a number of decades at least.

Much like some male dominated congregations today where nothing is to be questioned. The elders are to be obeyed. The people, especially the sisters, are expected to sit in the pew, give their money, feign respect (my sarcasm), and shut-up.

E3 This verse does not mean that the sisters do not have the Holy Spirit, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, or any ministry in the church.

E4 These sisters must learn meekness instead of domineering, so not to be arrogant. That is why they must learn to be quiet. These domineering women needed to do the opposite to learn God’s ways.

E1 1 Timothy 2:13-14 WEL For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 Adam was not deceived, but the woman, being deceived, was in transgression.

E2 The sisters must have had an evil attitude of believing they are right, correct, to be believed, etc. because of culture and being raised such.

E3 Sisters can be deceived. These sisters must have had an attitude that they did not think they were not deceived and perhaps could not be deceived..

E4 We learn that Adam had the greatest sin.

F1 He deliberately, willfully, cravenly wanted to commit this sin.

F4 Adam, as many understand it, being present did not stop Eve from eating.

A Few Thoughts About the Gospel of Mark

Notes: Mark deals with Jesus the Servant.

B1 Example 1: Mark 10:45 NET For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

C1 It was prophesied: Isaiah 42:1-4 ESV Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.

C2 It was fulfilled: Philippians 2:6-7 WEB who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.

Commenting on this passage Marvin R. Vincent, D.D writes: Taking the word ἁρπαγμὸν (A.V., robbery) to mean a highly prized possession, we understand Paul to say that Christ, being, before His incarnation, in the form of God, did not regard His divine equality as a prize which was to be grasped at and retained at all hazards, but, on the contrary, laid aside the form of God, and took upon Himself the nature of man. The emphasis in the passage is upon Christ's humiliation. The fact of His equality with God is stated as a background, in order to throw the circumstances of His incarnation into stronger relief. Hence the peculiar form of Paul's statement Christ's great object was to identify Himself with humanity; not to appear to men as divine but as human. Had He come into the world emphasizing His equality with God, the world would have been amazed, but not saved He did not grasp at this. The rather He counted humanity His prize, and so laid aside the conditions of His preexistent state, and became man.

B2 Example 2: Mark 3:1-6 NLT Jesus went into the synagogue again and noticed a man with a deformed hand. Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus' enemies watched him closely. If he healed the man's hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the deformed hand, "Come and stand in front of everyone." Then he turned to his critics and asked, "Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?" But they wouldn't answer him. He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, "Hold out your hand." So the man held out his hand, and it was restored! At once the Pharisees went away and met with the supporters of Herod to plot how to kill Jesus.

C1 His enemies’ solution is to kill: Psalms 37:32 WEB The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to kill him.

C2 These Jews learned true religion, but they refused it, preferring their own teaching to God’s. Psalm 107:11 NET because they had rebelled against God's commands, and rejected the instructions of the sovereign king.

C3 They rejected God’s Laws and made God angry. This is definitely not wise. Let us beware! Isaiah 5:24-25 NLT Therefore, just as fire licks up stubble and dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will rot and their flowers wither. For they have rejected the law of the LORD of Heaven's Armies; they have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. That is why the LORD's anger burns against his people, and why he has raised his fist to crush them. The mountains tremble, and the corpses of his people litter the streets like garbage. But even then the LORD's anger is not satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike!

A Few Thoughts About the Gospel of Matthew

B1 Basically there are two parts.

C1 Part 1 has the Lord Jesus teaching all the people.

C2 Part 2 has the Lord Jesus emphasizing teaching the 12 Apostles.

B2 The Gospel (Good News) has been given recording the earthly life and teaching of the Messiah—Jesus (Yeshua).

B3 Little is given of his life before beginning His ministry.

B4 His genealogy is given to establish His credentials as a Jew. The rest of the Gospel is His ministry.

B5 He taught the true Law. He interprets it correctly which reveals that the teaching of the religious leaders had been corrupted.

B6 Matthew shows through prophecy and miracles that Jesus is Messiah. Jesus does many, even raising the dead. These are not false signs and wonders that might originate with God’s enemies (satan and evil people).

B7 At first, Jesus is widely accepted by the common people but not the leaders. When the people realize that He is not a conquering King but a suffering Messiah, they largely rejected Him and wanted Him dead. Their solution to problems is the death penalty.

C1 Messiah is prophesied in two comings—one as the suffering Messiah and the other as the conquering Messiah.

C2 Conquering Messiah is coming

D3 He comes to rescue Israel at the end of the Tribulation: Zechariah 14:1-4 NIV A day of the LORD is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city. Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle.
